The Progress of WSU EcoCAR3’s Innovation Topic

Innovation is just one of many focus areas of EcoCAR 3. Students participating in the Innovation track can contribute to meeting future energy and fuel efficiency goals through unique and creative ways. Innovation projects in EcoCAR 3 provide students with the opportunity to utilize and develop state-of-the-art technologies and methods. The innovation topic selected by the Wayne State University (WSU) EcoCAR 3 team focuses on the development of a clutch-assisted engine start for their hybrid drivetrain by controlling the slip, speed, and torque.

The engine will be started by using the electric motor and clutch, as opposed to a starter in most conventional vehicles.  Instead of a starter, an electro-hydraulic actuator will be used to receive signals from a controller in order to engage or disengage the clutch and therefore will be able to start the engine with the help of the electric motor.

wsu_the_progress_of_wsu_ecocar3s_innovation_topic_21

The real innovation in this work, however, is the slip control.  Sebastian Briones, the electrical subteam leader, is currently working on a code that will tell the clutch to “slip” when too much torque is applied.  Slip, speed, and torque control are important when working on this innovation.

“Several control loops will be implemented to create an interactive system that can respond to any condition. Slip control is critical because it’ll prevent potential damages to the engine and electric motor,” said Sebastian.

The biggest challenge with this system is using the clutch while the vehicle is moving. Closing the clutch right away while the vehicle is in motion can damage the engine.  Achieving the slip control is necessary to overcome this challenge.  The torque distribution from the slip control will be split between the engine and the electric motor. The team will strive to achieve smooth transitions between the engine and electric motor, which will demand extensive hours of testing and calibration.

The WSU EcoCAR3 team hopes to start “Phase 1” validation and vehicle testing by the end of this month. “Phase 0,” which involves research, modeling, and simulation processes has started during summer and almost completed.

Sebastian is excited to see the potential that their innovation topic holds and is confident that it will succeed in the automotive industry,

“This system is attractive for all automakers that are shifting to produce hybrid electric vehicles. It is an efficient solution that provides all the functionalities that the automotive industry demands. The WSU EcoCAR 3 team believes that it will be accepted by potential customers that seek cutting edge technologies and innovative systems.”

Fan Profile – Gas Monkey Fans from Dewy Rose, GA – 898 Miles to Dallas, TX

A few weeks back we heard a loud scream at the front of the Gas Monkey Energy offices and a few of us ran up to see what was happening.  When we got up to the front we saw one of our fans hugging the Shorty Short VW Bus.  Apparently, it was Angela Moore’s favorite Gas Monkey Garage build and for her to see it up close was a huge thrill to say the least.

Angela’s husband, Joe, had an idea to make the approximate 900-mile journey to Gas Monkey Garage with their friends Frank and Marka Day.  In addition to being huge Gas Monkey Garage fans, they’re also massive fans of the hard rock band, Jackyl who played Gas Monkey Live the day they visited the Garage.

A big THANK YOU to the Moore’s and Day’s for driving all the way from Georgia to come visit the Garage, eat at Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill, rock out a Gas Monkey Live and of course hug our Shorty Short VW Bus.  We love the group’s dedication and enthusiasm!!!

Yes, Aaron the Bearded Wonder is Leaving Gas Monkey Garage

Richard here. As you may have heard by now, the Bearded Wonder has decided to leave Gas Monkey Garage. I want you all to know that it was not my decision and came completely out of left field. Aaron has been a part of Gas Monkey Garage since day one, and it will be a painstaking process moving forward without his talents. It is a big hit to GMG, but please note that it would be an insult to everyone here at Gas Monkey who has been putting in the work these past few years to say that we can’t do it without him.

Gas Monkey Garage is not one person, it’s not two people, it’s a team. AK helped me build GMG, and he helped build the team here, which is why I’m confident we will continue to crank out killer rides week after week. You know I like to keep the drama away from the cameras, and that’s something I’ll continue to strive for. You won’t see a degenerating team or a bunch of arguing. We are about the cars, brand and family!

To our fans, I want to say thanks for all of the continued support all these years, and keep watching because we aren’t going anywhere! Wishing nothing but good luck to Aaron and all past, current and future monkeys!

And to Aaron, I would like to sincerely express my appreciation for the 13 years you put into GMG. We worked long and hard from the bottom to the top. Not everyday was good, and we had our share of disagreements, but it has been a hell of a ride and I would not change a minute of it. Neither of us could have achieved this without the other. Thank You, Sir.

GT is on Track for Success

Year Three is in full swing, and the Georgia Tech EcoCAR 3 Team is right on track for a Year Three Competition success! At the Year Two Competition, held in Yuma, AZ and San Diego, CA, Georgia Tech showed brilliant preparation for management presentations, and vehicle performance testing, which included on road vehicle testing and energy consumption events. By successfully integrating the entire powertrain, Georgia Tech was one of the with a functioning vehicle at the Year Two Final Competition.

gt_itusedtobeawreck_image2This year Georgia Tech’s engineers have made incredible progress! They were able to finish new anti-vibration electric motor and transfer case mounts which gives their 2016 Chevrolet Camaro a smooth ride, and they finished the battery pack cooling system. The team recently received approval to build the Energy Storage System (ESS) in their vehicle!

More students have been trained on Finite Element Analysis, or FEA, which allows you to determine how strong a part is on the computer by making a model of it and applying forces to it in software. In addition to the mechanical advances the team has had, the controls group has also been hard at work.  Additionally, the Georgia Tech controls team created a system to control the engine via controller rather than the accelerator pedal.

The combination of all of these elements and the rate this team is working makes the Georgia Tech team unstoppable!

Hi~Po Hauler – Paint & Body Behind the Scenes

Where Are They Now: Justin Brumley

From the winding country roads of West Virginia, to the major highways of the Motor City, Justin Brumley has pushed his passion for vehicles into full gear. Landing a position at one of the nation’s top automotive franchises reassured Brumley that his childhood dream of working with cars could be a reality. Though the road to a career in the auto industry was not always an easy ride.

Justin earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University in May 2014. When beginning his graduate studies in the fall, Brumley explored research assistant positions and came across the opportunity to be involved in an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC).

“Ever since the time I was a teenager, I would always go out and help my dad work on cars,” said Brumley on why EcoCAR3 was the right fit. “That kind of grew into my own interest and hobby of cars and racing.”

wvu_wherearetheynow_image1

Brumley took on the role of Engineering Manager in Year One of the EcoCAR3 competition. As a leader on the team, Brumley was responsible for organizing and recruiting team members, managing tasks within the garage and preparing deliverables for final competition. Not only did he have to learn the ins and outs of competition as a first-time competitor, Brumley also quickly became a role model for other students on the team.

“Being in a leadership position on the team helped me exceed in many different areas, especially as Engineering Manager,” said Brumley. “The biggest challenge for me was getting a lot of people together and still being able to collaborate. Knowing everything while not knowing anything was kind of difficult because there are times when I wanted to specialize in certain things, but I couldn’t because I needed to know the overall picture for the team.”

wvu_wherearetheynow_image2

Brumley emerged as the driving force behind EcoCAR3, establishing a solid foundation for team members in the final two years of competition. He received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from WVU in May 2016 and was eager to put his vehicle experience into action.

Through his AVTC journey, Brumley’s combination of leadership and automotive expertise helped him ultimately establish a career with the specialization he was seeking. Brumley now works as a Drive Quality Specialist at General Motors, concentrating on powertrain and global propulsion systems.

“I knew I wanted to go into something hands on,” said Brumley on choosing a career. “I didn’t want to be behind the desk all day long. With this position, I’m able to get out, get on the road and actually drive the cars.”

During his time with the WVU EcoCAR3 team, Brumley gained experience working with ETAS and AVL systems, programs he now uses everyday in his career. He also spends much of his time taking advantage of General Motors’ numerous training opportunities, allowing him to gain expertise in more than just drive quality. But ultimately, it is the need for speed that drives Brumley’s automotive passion.

“The most rewarding part about going to work everyday is getting to drive cars,” Brumley admits.

wvu_wherearetheynow_-image3

Justin resides in Detroit, MI where he continues to contribute to automotive innovation and build a lasting career. Looking towards the future, Brumley hopes to continue working for General Motors and eventually specialize in chassis controls.

As he reflects on the path to his career, Brumley has a few words of advice for those also hoping to enter the industry.

“Always try to be learning and always try to expand yourself,” Brumley suggests. “Ask questions! Always ask questions.”

Fan Profile – Gas Monkey Fans from Mar del Plata, Argentina – 5,500 Miles from Dallas, TX

Dario De Francesco, his dad Ruben and friends Raul and Jorge made the trip to Dallas, TX after the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association) trade show in Las Vegas.  As with many other Fast N’ Loud fans from other countries, they needed to see Gas Monkey Garage in person.  Thank goodness for Google Translate, because Dario and friends spoke very little English.

They’re all big fans of Richard Rawlings and they love how he wheels and deals in each show.  Dario said that American Muscle Cars, like Mustangs and Camaros, have huge followings in Argentina.  His friends and family, in their hometown of Mar del Plata in the Buenos Aires Province, also love Fast N’ Loud and they’re appreciative of how much they all learn as Aaron and the Monkeys execute complex builds.

CSULA EcoCAR 3 Introduces Clean Transportation to Local Students

Written By: Jennifer Bulnes

Recently the Cal State Los Angeles EcoCAR 3 team welcomed over 600 students to their campus. The CSULA EcoCAR 3 team organized six individual sessions that focused on encouraging STEM and higher education for 6th -9th graders while demonstrating real world experiences related to the team’s participation in EcoCAR 3.

1

Sessions hosted by the team included lab tours, where students had the opportunity of gaining a first look at the team’s progress in converting their 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

img_0798

img_0801

During the garage tours, students learned about the different components and organizational structure that make up the CSULA EcoCAR 3 team.

csula_csulaecocar3introducesclean_4

Students also saw the team’s trophies and awards, and had a chance to look under the hood to see the team’s unique innovative approach at turning their Camaro into a hybrid electric vehicle.

The CSULA team conducted workshops to demonstrate the aspects and challenges that any of the 16 universities might experience while participating in an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition. Similar to EcoCAR 3, the students worked in teams with other students to build a mini electric car or a mini solar powered car.

img_0390 img_0373 img_0381 img_0383

All teams had the same amount of time to complete a specific project with the same instructions provided.
