ERAU Completes Vehicle Testing at TRC

During the Year Two competition, the Embry-Riddle EcoCAR 3 Team received the TRC Testing Award. This sponsored award provides a round trip for the team vehicle and select students to the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio. This award recognizes the team who best demonstrates readiness to begin vehicle testing and controls development for Year Three. The ERAU EcoCAR 3 team was able to excel in all 3 stages of the technical inspection and competed in both of the bonus events at the Year Two competition in Yuma.

ERAU team members Tom Gorgia, Matthew Nelson, Andre Napier and ERAU Industry Faculty Advisor, Dave Spitzer, were able to travel to TRC in Ohio this past weekend to complete their vehicle testing. The team was given the opportunity to use vehicle dynamometers with emissions testing capability and outdoor track testing facilities.

Gorgia said, “the emissions lab and dynamic testing facilities allow the Eco Super Sport to get the soul and passion a Camaro consumer expects to feel. TRC was so accommodating to our team and helped us to conduct the tests we needed to run to begin validating our VTS targets.”

The team ran their vehicle through a rigorous set of tests, worked with professionals at the facility and learned from their experiences and embraced their expert feedback.

“EcoCAR creates amazing opportunities for our young people to learn and grow, and this trip to TRC was no exception,” said Spitzer. “Testing is critical to success in EcoCAR Year 3 and we really got the most out of this opportunity.”

Gas Monkey Weekly with Christie Brimberry Episode 3 – A Conversation with Mike Coy

Well, some of our fans on social media didn’t believe we’d have a t-shirt winner outside the U.S., but Ange Morris from Harrogate North Yorkshire, England helped dispel that myth right quick.

In this episode, Christie had a nice long chat with Mike Coy in the back of the ’49 Chevy about his makeshift water proof hefty bag boots, that you can’t rush paint and you can’t, as Mike said, “put too much water in a nuclear reactor”.  Mike also offers insight into how many coats of paint and clear he put on the truck.

Also, be on the lookout for information on who won Havoline’s Bad to the Chrome sweepstakes and this awesome truck.

DENSO Supports UT EcoCAR 3 Team with $50,000 Donation

ut_densodonat_image1

The DENSO Foundation has donated $50,000 to the University of Tennessee’s EcoCAR 3 team to help them pursue dynamic testing and outreach goals of the EcoCAR 3 competition.  DENSO Foundation’s donation will allow Team Tennessee to purchase a truck to pull the 2016 Camaro on a trailer to showcase the Camaro in local outreach events.

Doug Patton, DENSO Foundation President, and Brian Crawford, from DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, met with the UT EcoCAR 3 students to present a check and talk about the importance of the EcoCAR 3 competition. Mr. Patton appreciates the value in safely transporting the Camaro to sites where further testing can be done to refine the vehicle. He also values the hands-on experience that this testing offers for UT students. Mr. Patton also places a high emphasis on encouraging the youth to pursue a STEM education, and encouraged Team Tennessee to bring the Camaro around the Knoxville area to excite the next generation of automotive engineers.

UT’s EcoCAR 3 team is excited about the opportunities in dynamic testing and community outreach that being able to transport the Camaro will offer, and looks forward to sharing more about the EcoCAR 3 project with the Knoxville community.

When Kevin and Rachel Breure decided to take a road trip for their one-year wedding anniversary; a trip to Dallas to see Gas Monkey Garage and have dinner at Gas Monkey Bar & Grill immediately came to mind.

While Kevin is more of a Gas Monkey fan than Rachel, who enjoys the Waco, TX reality show starring Chip and Joanna Gaines, they both watch Fast N’ Loud together.  Kevin and Rachel headed to Waco after Dallas where they planned to eat at Richard Rawlings’ Garage in Harker Heights, TX.

We love our fans who specifically come to Dallas, just to visit Gas Monkey Garage. We hope we made their trip that much better with a special tour.

The Year Three Fall Workshop Wraps up at MathWorks

blog

Another workshop has come to a close for this year’s EcoCAR 3 students as they left Boston with new skills under their belt. Over the course of the workshop, teams participated in multi-track training featuring competition sponsors at MathWorks Headquarters in Natick, MA. Teams also received an update on Year Three competition rules, upcoming deliverables and EcoCAR 3 events for the coming year.

Training sessions during the workshop included technical, project management, and communications.  The teams had the opportunity to receive valuable and extensive training from Argonne National Laboratory, General Motors, MathWorks, Siemens, PMI, Weber Shandwick, and more.

In the engineering technical sessions, students learned mechanical project planning, how to create electrical systems evaluation plans, and received training in sponsor software that will be used on the vehicle this year. Safety is always a priority for EcoCAR 3, and on Thursday, teams received in-depth training on high-voltage safety awareness.

In the project management and communication tracks, students were just as busy learning to manage social media, create outreach campaigns, and prepare project management execution plans. These two areas are important for students to keep their teams running on time, smoothly and safely, and to communicate their teams’ success.

A special thanks to MathWorks for opening your doors to provide the facilities to make this workshop possible, as well as all EcoCAR 3 sponsors!
