UA EcoCAR 3 Team Hosts “Coming in Clutch” Sponsor Social

The UA EcoCAR 3 team recently hosted a sponsor social event that gave sponsors the opportunity to receive an in-depth look at what fuels the team’s innovative operations. “Innovation is really going to drive the economy for the future,” said LawDocs CEO and local UA EcoCAR 3 sponsor Catherine Massey.

ua-ecocar-3-team_ua-ecocar-3-team-hosts-coming-in-clutch-sponsor-social_featureimageThe event kicked off with a look into the communications team and a tour of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Sponsors also had the opportunity to see Capstone Agency, the nationally awarded student-run integrated communications firm that assists the communications team. Lunch was provided for the sponsors by the UA EcoCAR 3 Team. This gave the sponsors the opportunity to speak with members of the team and learn more about each member’s individual role within EcoCAR 3.

“I am really impressed by the work that the EcoCAR 3 Team is doing, especially being able to effectively collaborate between the different departments of engineering and communications,” Massey said. “It really shows the innovation of the team members.”

Shortly after, the heads of the communications and engineering departments explained the structure of their sectors, while UA EcoCAR 3 Project Manager Trevor Ford gave sponsors an overview of the team and their budget.ua-ecocar-3-team_ua-ecocar-3-team-hosts-coming-in-clutch-sponsor-social_image-1

“Anytime we have an opportunity to get our local sponsors on site we like to,” said Ford, who started working on EcoCAR 3 in the spring of 2016. “We want to show our gratitude to our sponsors and let them as well as the public know how much we appreciate their donations and dedication because it not only positively impacts our team but the university as well,” Ford said.

After receiving a thorough review of what the UA EcoCAR 3 team has been up to this past year, the sponsors had the opportunity to visit the team garage and see the car. This occasion allowed sponsors the opportunity to really grasp and understand the different parts of the car along with the time, knowledge, patience and techniques that go into making a car.

Watch as Aaron Kaufman gets the SHOCK of his Life

Every once in a while you’re faced with two choices and you’re forced to choose the lesser of two very bad options (or maybe that happens to you all the time, I don’t know your life.) But that’s exactly what happened to the Bearded Wonder late one night while he was adjusting the timing on the ’49 Chevy 3100.

He was in the shop, all alone, timing light in hand while he advanced and retarded the spark to get it to run just right when he lost his footing. Normally that wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but when your hands are full and you’re vaulted head-first into the engine compartment the stakes get a little higher. And then they get a lot higher when the two places your free hand can fall are the serpentine belt or the distributor cap. Aaron chose the option that wouldn’t shear the skin off his hand and chose the distributor. What happened next was a short in the cap that sent more voltage than you might want coursing through your body arcing from the cap to his hand, up his arm and eventually out of his back to the underside of the hood.

Well, here… Just watch, it’s more entertaining to see than to read about.

After the short, and subsequent scorpioning off the fender, Aaron goes right back to work after checking to make sure he didn’t mar the paint.

Always the consummate professional!

HEVT Trains the Next Generation of “Master Builders”

Written by: Emily Walters

In order to inspire the local children of Blacksburg, the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team of Virginia Tech (HEVT) worked with the Children’s Museum of Blacksburg to host the first Master Builders event. Earlier this month, children and families came to the museum to work with HEVT engineers to build “car parts” out of various materials like Duplos, Lincoln Logs, an Imagination Playground and toy gears.

The HEVT team members worked with the children to talk through what they wanted to build and helped them with some of the smaller, trickier materials (sometimes those Lincoln Logs just do not want to stack!). Many children ended up just working with the team members to create their own machines or toys, and the team is happy with how successful the event was.

The main goal of the event was to inspire local youth to think about the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) field and employ those thinking skills to build something new. After building with HEVT members, the children became certified “Master Builders” and were invited to take a photo with their “license to build.” The HEVT members were very excited to be taking photos with the license too! The HEVT engineering team members had a lot of fun working with the children and certainly did not mind getting the chance to build with these materials either.

The team loved working with this future generation of potential engineers and hopes to hold more Master Builders events with the local community in the future. Check out some photos from the event below:

Fan Profile – Gas Monkey Fans from Tel Aviv – 6,951 Miles from Dallas, TX

Yoav Kahati and Yifat Machluv are massive fans of  Gas Monkey Garage and Fast N’ Loud.  They’ve never missed an episode on Friday nights on Discovery Channel Israel.  Dallas, TX became a must stop during their cross-country trip from New York to Los Angeles.

They love both Richard and Aaron and Yoav wanted us to know that “kauf” means monkey in Hebrew so according to him, Kaufman literally means “monkey man” – very cool. They think the current Monkeys do amazing work, but they admitted that they miss Scot McMillan and KC Mathieu at times.  Favorite builds, for them, includes the Frankensteined Ford F150 from Season1 and the Big, Bad C10 from Season 5.

It was very nice having them at at the shop and we thank them for their dedication to Gas Monkey Garage and Fast N’ Loud.

Buckeyes Defend Title & Accelerate into Year Three

Written By: Nick Tomczak

The Ohio State EcoCAR 3 team brought home yet another championship in Year Two of the EcoCAR 3 competition last spring. The Buckeyes achieved first place in 11 of the 35 scored events, making this Ohio State’s third consecutive first place finish. “In less than four months, they brought their hybrid Camaro to life,” said team advisor Dr. Shawn Midlam-Mohler. “Special thanks to Ohio State and all of our sponsors who made this win possible.” The team came back to Columbus with more than a few trophies and some stories. With the first two years of competition behind them, the team got right to work in order to keep up Ohio State’s championship streak.

Teams have arrived in San Diego, CA to participate in more than a dozen technical, communications, and project management presentations highlighting their activities from Year Two.

The team got right to work once their Camaro returned back into the Ohio State Student Garage. The primary focus was to fix the bugs in the system identified at competition in order to prepare for the Year 3 vehicle integration and refinement work. Chief among these issues was a problem that forced the electrical sub-team to switch the leads on the current sense module in the battery pack. Next, the team had the chance to jump start vehicle testing efforts by setting up the vehicle’s engine on a dynamometer to get baseline reading and facilitated further testing during the year. Finally, the team wrapped up the summer by sending the vehicle off to PPG Paints for a new look. The paint job (pictured below) features the pride of the Ohio State brand by complementing the white base with scarlet and grey accents and block O on the hood.

2

The Ohio State EcoCAR 3 Team has no plans on coasting into the year. The team returned from Fall Workshop with a new set of skills and their sights set on the Year 3 Competition. Throughout the third build year, the team will focus their efforts on completing the integration of major vehicle components. By the end of Year 3, the Classic Recharged Camaro will be a 65% showroom ready vehicle. The car will be able to operate in all four designed modes in order to allow the driver to choose between efficiency and performance. The vehicle will also feature a student designed and implemented Advanced Driver Assistance System. The system will be able to identify street signs and lanes to keep the driver safe. After the completion of all integration work, the vehicle will undergo extensive testing before shipping off to competition where the vehicle will be judged based on fuel economy, emissions and performance.

The Ohio State EcoCAR Team’s work will not be confined to the garage. The communications and project management teams will be increasing its community outreach efforts. Through tours, ride and drives, car shows and other events the team will engage with the community to learn about customer wants and needs.  The team will also work with local schools and youth groups to encourage the next generation of students to pursue degrees in STEM education.

After successful finishes in the first two years of competition, the Ohio State EcoCAR 3 Team has its sights set on the final two years of competition. With a full plate of tasks, the engineers will be putting the final touches on integrating an energy efficient powertrain that maximizes performance. The communications team will bring the car alive to engage the Columbus, Ohio region with the Classic Recharged Hybrid Chevrolet Camaro.

Shaun Foist of Breaking Benjamin Stops by Gas Monkey Garage

Shaun Foist, drummer for rock band Breaking Benjamin, happens to be a big fan of Gas Monkey Garage and Fast N’ Loud so he dropped by to say hi to Richard and the Monkeys.  Breaking Benjamin recently finished a tour that lasted almost two years with bands such as Disturbed, Alter Bridge and Saint Asonia as well as jumping on a short tour with Korn.  After only a two-week break, Shaun is itching to get back out there.

Shaun hung for a few hours talking with Richard and he checked out a bunch of the cars, including the current build that was in its final hours of crunch time.  He loves all American Muscle – especially Mustangs as he’s owned five of them throughout the years.  Currently back home in Oklahoma he has a 2014 Shelby GT 500 and a 2003 SVT Cobra 10th Anniversary edition.

His favorite Gas Monkey Garage builds are the  Hot Wheels Corvette, Super Sonic Camaro and the Ford EcoBoost ’72 Pantera.  We’re looking forward to him and the rest of Breaking Benjamin coming back for a visit when they roll on through Dallas, TX.

New Web Series – Crushin’ With Mike Coy Episode #1

We love to have fun at Gas Monkey Garage and Mike Coy is often at the center of it all; when he’s not painting of course.  We decided to put our Baileigh Industrial Press to good use and crush some things around the shop.

We’re starting with keepsakes on people’s desks and tool chests, but we plan on moving on to larger items and a lot more destruction.

We hope you enjoy our 1st episode of ‘Crushin’ with Mike Coy’ as we crush Richard Rawling’s favorite Magic 8-ball.

More episodes to come!

UW EcoCAR Presents Innovation Topic at The Atlantic “WHAT’S NEXT?” Technology Summit

Five students from the University of Washington EcoCAR team had the exciting opportunity to participate in the “WHAT’S NEXT?” technology summit hosted by The Atlantic, and presented with Boeing in celebration of their centennial year in the aerospace industry. The two day program brought together approximately 700 business executives, entrepreneurs, policymakers, students, and journalists from across the country.

uwash_boeinginnovationsummit_featureimage

75+ top university STEM students had been selected to participate and highlight their exciting advances in science and technology. The University of Washington students – Brian Magnuson, Jake Garrison, James Goin, Aman Kalia, and Joanna Mazer – engaged in student workshops and industry panels, allowing them the unique opportunity to connect with the influential attendees, as well as showcase their research in the fuel efficiency in automotive vehicles.

uwash_boeinginnovationsummit_2

The highlight of the team’s attendance included a presentation from graduate student Brian Magnuson, in which he introduced the UW EcoCAR innovation topic: “Improving Fuel Economy Through Driver Prediction”. The team is attempting to reduce petroleum energy usage of a plug-in series hybrid powertrain using predicted driver characteristics. The ability to confidently understand repeated driver routes and speed habits can help identify road sections where energy is gained from changes in kinetic and potential energy. This data can be used to supplement gas portions, and provide an increase in overall energy efficiency of the vehicle.

Gas Monkey Fan Helps Force a Game 7 in the 2016 World Series

Hybridizing Alien Spaceships with PSU

Written By: Lauren Kokoskie

Recently the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team (PSU AVT) packed up and blasted off to WPSU Eventapolooza. The annual event held by local radio station, WPSU, gives kids and their families the opportunity to see what it is like to work behind the scenes at a radio station and interact with organizations within the State College community. This year, the organization decided to put an out-of-this-world twist on the event by making it a “cosmic carnival” theme. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about various organizations in the community while wearing alien antennas and pretending to be astronauts.

PSU AVT team members were given the opportunity to teach potential future engineers about the future of vehicles and alternative fuels.

psu_hybridizing-alien-spaceships_image-1

PSU AVT put their own cosmic spin on the transportation industry by helping kids create eco-friendly spaceships. Participants had the opportunity to use paper plates, glue, googly eyes, and puffballs to create a one-of-a-kind spaceship.

psu_hybridizing-alien-spaceships_image-2

The PSU AVT team members then explained hybrid-electric technology and invited the kids to draw their own alternative fuel source on their own spaceships, and explain why they chose their respective alternative fuel source.

psu_hybridizing-alien-spaceships_image-3

PSU AVT was able to educate over 150 kids and their families about the EcoCAR 3 competition, while working with the Event Coordinator, Tamra Fatemi-Badi, for WPSU and the entire staff. Although the team can’t build spaceships, we think hybrid-electric vehicles are out-of-this-world.
