See a Formula One Car Come To Life From Concept To Track

It’s the end of the day on a Friday, but like those teachers you loved so much back in the day here’s your homework: watch this video.

At 8:21 it pushes the boundary of how much time I’m willing to spend watching stuff on YouTube, but it’s really amazing seeing an F1 car come together. Not come together in the built sense, but from conception and computer design. Too often it’s easy to forget that parts aren’t born parts, cars aren’t just assembled, they all begin as an idea and this takes you through the entire process of how the most technically complex cars on the planet are born.

Travel Back A 100 Years With Slew Of Antique Fords

We cover a lot of auctions and car shows, but one recent show in particular caught our eye since it was like nothing we’d ever seen before. That car show is the Old Car Festival which features a slew of old cars.

The event is held in Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI which is home to the Henry Ford Museum which as you can imagine helps draw quite a bit of antique Fords to the festival. At the most recent festival hundreds of cars were on hand ranging from the 1890s to 1932. Take a stroll down memory lane… Well, maybe not memory lane because I highly doubt anyone reading this has first-hand memories of these cars on the street, but you get the gist. Get your Gatsby on with the gallery below.

Vintage Top Fuel Dragster Looks To Race Across Auction Block

The auto world is full of rivalries, some like Ford vs. Ferrari were taken quite seriously while some leaned more silly. Take drag racer Tom McEwen and his rivalry with Don Prudhomme. Don was nicknamed “The Snake” and as everyone knows mongooses eat snakes, so Tom became “Mongoo$e,” adding the dollar sign for good measure or perhaps it doubled as his password. Though the naming rivalry may seem child’s play Tom’s 1968 Top Fuel Dragster is anything but.

Raced in the 1968 season the car would win the Stardust Invitational, have the lowest ET at the U.S. Nationals and win Lions 14th Anniversary Race. Having made quite a name for itself on the drag strip it was shortly after commemorated by landing the cover of Drag Racing Magazine in 1969 and featured again in Hot Rod the following year. Since that time the car has continued to live on after racing thanks to a restoration by Mike Kuhl and Tom Allen. It would also be Mike Kuhl who built the cars 392 cu.-in. V8 engine by way of Mike Kuhl Engineering.

The classic Top Fuel Dragster is being auctioned alongside the Mongoo$e’s original, restored, trailer and with signed nose piece and racing helmet. A must buy for any drag racing or motorsports collector. The dragster is being offered at Mecum’s Phoenix auction as part of the Ugly John Collection and is estimated to sell between $135,000 – $160,000.

1 of 4 Ever Produced, ’55 Chrysler Ghia ST Special To Auction

A sucker for Chrysler’s of yesteryear, especially the famed “letter series,” this 1955 Chrysler Ghia ST Special might just be a new favorite.

Born in a time where performance seemed to take a backseat to design, this car is the pinnacle of design from two of the most prominent car designers in history. American stylist for Chrysler, Virgil Exner and Luigi Segre, designer and owner at Carrozzeria Ghia would team up during the early 1950s on a series of designs such as this ’55. Furthermore, the duo would elicit the help of French Chrysler designer Charles Ladouch. In the end, the men would produce just four of these beauties which was shown at the 1955 Turin Motor show.

In 2014 the car would undergo a nut and bolt restoration restoring the car to its Ghia Coachwork and Chrysler chassis. Finished in the original two-tone copper and ivory and features a 331 cu.-in. 250hp Hemi V8 engine. It also features power steering and power brakes with period correct wire wheels.

The four made were split up with two going to French customers and two going to Italian customers, with none coming to the states. However, one has since made its way here and is being offered at Mecum’s Phoenix auction in mid-March.

Ram Introduces All-New 60-40 Split Tailgate

There’s a lot going on in the world today and nothing more important then the war of the tailgates [insert eye roll]. It began innocently enough, GMC introducing a an innovative multifunctional tailgate, but then came their knockout punch with the “Anthem” commercial showing Ford and Ram owners getting rid of their tailgates. Shots fired.

Today Ram introduces their own multifunction tailgate to the 2019 Ram 1500. Unfortunately, the functionality of it is akin the saw blade on a Swiss Army knife, it’s a function, but what are you really supposed to do with it? The new tailgate opens traditionally, right side only, left side only, both doors and, of course, not at all. When opening one of the two sides it does so on vertical hinges so instead of laying down they swing open and do so in a 60-40 split. This means the left side of the tailgate is 60% and the right side 40%.

Now I haven’t ever owned a truck, but I’ve driven them and more importantly for this point, I’ve seen them and I can’t think of a problem this solves more efficiently than just having the entire tailgate down? Wood too long? Drop the gate. Getting in? Drop the gate. Even when considering not having enough room to drop the gate the tailgate sides require about the same amount of room behind the truck to swing open. The most practical element is an additional cost $295 on top of the $995 tailgate, a center step. They say necessity is the mother of all invention and I don’t see any necessity here.

A Lap At The Rolex 24 From Behind The Wheel Of A Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO

If you’re not a fan of endurance racing, we get it, it can be, well, enduring, but middle of the night racing can be visually stunning. Case and point, watching this driver change and lap around Daytona International Speedway’s road course from the POV of driver Miloš Pavlović.

Piloting the Precision Performance Motorsports No. 47 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO which was also sponsored by Gas Monkey Energy, the helmet cam shows how smoothly teams change drivers throughout the course of the 24 hour race. This was just one driving stint by Miloš who was joined behind the wheel by Linus Lundqvist, Steve Dunn and Don Yount. Unfortunately, the team would spend a few hours in the pit mid-race with gearbox issues, but return to finish the event in P20.

Most Powerful Ford Super Duty Ever Delivers Optional 7.3-Liter V8

Suppose it’s called Super Duty for a reason and Ford’s 2020 F-Series Super Duty offerings certainly live up to the moniker.

The most eye popping upgrade for the 2020 model year trucks is the new in-house designed and built 7.3-liter V8. This V8 option joins the already available standard 6.2-liter. On the diesel side the third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine got an upgrade and comes with the all-new 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, as does the 7.3-liter gas option. The new transmission will also be available for the standard 6.7-liter gas option and despite having four additional gear options it takes up the same amount of space as the 6-speed with minimal weight increase. These upgrades not only give the truck its highest power ratings, but its highest fifth-wheel towing and payload ratings.

All this while continuing to push the envelope on in cab technology. Via Ford:

New F-Series Super Duty now offers class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist, while its Trailer Reverse Guidance is now compatible with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers; standard FordPass Connect™ with 4G LTE modem and available wireless charging keep you connected; smart driver-assist features such as automatic emergency braking are standard on XLT series and above.

The 2020 F-Series Super Duty will begin hitting showrooms this fall.

Three Most Eclectic Cars From Paris Retromobile Week Auction

In full swing this week is Paris’s Retromobile Week and one of the highlights of that is Wednesday’s RM Sotheby’s auction, an auction which brings a variety of eclectic automobiles. Sure, they may not be as eclectic overseas, but on this side of the pond these makes are rare and even more so worldwide are these vintage models.

1957 Brütsch Mopetta

Shown at the Goodwood Revival in 2006 this three-wheeled 1957 Brütsch Mopetta is a super rare microcar. The manufacturer produced a variety of options, but the Mopetta offered here was limited to just 14 ever being made making this one exceptionally rare. Making it even more desirable is that this has been restored to near original which with the low production run looks to bring between $103,000 – $137,000 for the microcar.

1950 Citroën HY Panelvan

For over 30 years French manufacturer Citroën produced the HY beginning in 1947. This example is an early run 1950 that has been unrestored and is original, including its original Café San Rivo signage. Signage and van which were also seen in Tour de France ads around the same period and accompany the sale of the van. This classic panel van could bring in as much as $29,000 per projections.

1956 Chevrolet Corvette

Well, this one is not like the others and wouldn’t be too shocking at an auction in the U.S., but a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette in Paris?! This Arctic Blue and silver with red interior ‘Vette is the first year of the small-block V8 and following a slick cosmetic redesign. The car saw restoration in 2012 and was then sent overseas and purchased by an owner ins Switzerland who will now be offering the car at the Paris Auction. This American in Paris could hammer between $92,000 – $114,000.

Chevrolet eCOPO Pops Wheelie On First Drag Pass

Like it or not you’re going to be seeing a lot more electric in motorsports in the near future, but if this video of a 2019 Chevrolet eCOPO is a sign of what’s to come, hurry up!

The 800-volt battery powered car ran the quarter-mile in 10.142-seconds at 130.85mph. According to the YouTube poster, the car made the pass at just 80% power leaving a good portion of its 780 lb-ft. of torque and over 780hp left in the motor. Good news for us as it means an inevitable pass in the 9s and many more videos to come.

Tuned McLaren 720S Does 0-60 In 2-Seconds!

In longer than it takes you to read this sentence the Wheels Boutique team’s McLaren 720S would have hit 60mph on the drag strip. In fact, it takes about twice as long to read that sentence as I did it out loud multiple times timing myself.

The car features a turbo charger upgrade, ECUs by DME and a full exhaust system turning the cars 730hp 4-liter V8 into a 944hp monster. You can checkout it’s record setting pass for “the quickest and fastest down the ¼ mile and ½ mile” below.

As an added McLaren bonus because they’re apparently the rage the past 24 hours Hennessey took their McLaren 570GT with the HPE700 upgrade to Pennzoil’s proving grounds for validation testing. By the looks of the video below it appears to be validated.

The Coolest Car Collectibles From Next Week’s Sotheby’s Auction

RM Sotheby’s Paris 2019 auction is next Wednesday, February 6th and with it comes not only a slew of fancy cars, but some pretty rad collectibles. Here’s a look at three of the coolest non-car items going up on on the block from Paris.

Ferrari 250 Tool Kit

Hard to imagine any Ferrari owner getting there hands dirty, but if they were to their would be no bougier way to do so than this Ferrari 250 tool kit. This original kit features, “M. Riganti jack, Pirelli fan belt, four wooden-handle screw drivers, grease gun and extender, two hammers, six Beta wrenches and a complete set of bulbs and fuses” all within a nice leather bag and for only an estimated $9,000 – $14,000.

BBS Formula 1 Rear Wheels, 1997

On cars, off cars, under glass in your living room it’s hard to not love a good wheel and these BBSs are some good wheels. Race used on Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F300 Formula 1 car they’re now being offered for an estimated $4,500 – $5,500, but keep in mind they’re rears only. You’ll have to track down the front on your own.

Ferrari FF Engine with Stand

With stand for ONLY $35,000 – $45,000?! In reality this Ferrari factory used FF engine would make a cool piece in a home, that is if you have the money to drop on pieces. However, it is also still fully functional with an estimated 7,456 miles on it so would make for a sick drop into a build as well.

2019 Camaro ZL1 1LE Faster Than EVER!

What is being called by Chevrolet, “the fastest, most track-capable Camaro ever” will hit dealers in February thanks to the 10-speed automatic transmission option.

It may not seem like much, but this update to the ZL1 1LE will save you seconds off your lap times or grocery runs, whatever you’re using it for. How many seconds? Well, at General Motors’ 2.9-mile Milford Road Course the 10-speed transmission was pacing the track over half a second faster than its manual counterpart. At bigger tracks, such as the Nurburgring, the 10-speed is projected to cut several seconds from the six-speed times.

Additional features for the ZL1 1LE, via Chevrolet, include:

-Downforce-producing aero: Unique features include a carbon fiber rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front fascia that produce grip-generating downforce to help the car stick harder and drive faster in turns.

-Adjustable suspension: Racing-derived, lightweight Multimatic DSSV® dampers front and rear offer exceptional wheel and vehicle control. The front-end ride height is adjustable, along with the camber geometry. The rear stabilizer bar also offers three-way adjustability.

-Wheels and tires: Specific lightweight forged aluminum wheels are an inch wider but an inch smaller in diameter, front and rear, than standard ZL1 wheels and are used with new summer-only Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires1 that deliver max lateral grip of 1.10g.

-Lighter weight: The lighter wheels and dampers, along with thinner rear glass and a fixed-back rear seat, contribute to more than 50-pound lower curb weight than a standard ZL1 Coupe.

-Supercharged performance and more: The power behind the ZL1 1LE is the 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 engine. Brembo brakes are included, along with dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose premium audio system, heated and ventilated front seats and heated steering wheel.

When released next month the 10-speed automatic transmission will MSRP for $1,595.

Dodge, Jeep, Ram Drop Super Bowl Spots Ahead Of Game

Most things these days the Internet sees first and Super Bowl commercials are no exception. In the Internet-era, companies have tended to not just win Super Bowl Sunday with their ads, but the week and often weeks leading up to the big day online.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is trying to do just that, win this week, with the release of three online commercials for Dodge, Jeep and Ram. The hope is to build buzz for the spot to follow which Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer of FCA said, “for what’s next, everyone will just have to wait and see.” For now, you have two pretty straightforward ads in Dodge and Jeep, but a pretty creative and memorable spot by Ram playing off the idea of how past commercials brands are forgotten despite the commercial being memorable.

As for now, we’re intrigued to see if the three somehow come together or each brand remains separate. We will know when you do this Sunday.

This Is The Most Interesting Intake Manifold Video You’ll Ever See

For starters, the video is about the Hoonitruck, which for those living under a rock is a highly modified 1977 Ford F-150 Ken Block drove in Gymkhana 10. It features a tuned twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine putting out 900hp, but by utilizing the same engine as the Ford GT the team ran into a problem. They would need a one-of-a-kind intake manifold to get air from the turbo chargers to the cylinders. Enter Ford’s 3D printing capabilities.

Using a state of the art 3D printer in Germany the machine worked over 5 days creating the largest made and implemented 3D printed metal car part in history.

For an added bonus checkout around the :58 mark where it sounds like the voice over actor has a literal hiccup saying a German university name which I’ve listened to a dozen names and can’t make out, but laugh every time.

Hot Rod Pioneer Bill Burke’s Super Shaker Aims To Shake Up Auction

It is impossible to talk about the history of hot rods and Bonneville land speed records without mentioning the name Bill Burke. A pioneer on the hot rod scene Burke was responsible for some of the fastest, and coolest, cars of the mid-twentieth century and a part of the community throughout his 97 years.

Not just a fabricator, Burke became involved with Hot Rod magazine as early ad manager and also later for their sister title’s Motor Trend, and Street Rodder. This was all, of course, after he’d landed a Hot Rod cover a time or two with his unique creations. One such cover creation was this 1959 Bonneville Streamliner Super Shaker which Burke built and drove.

Landing the cover in January 1960 this Super Shaker was purpose built and that purpose was to go fast at Bonneville. The body was cast from a Cooper sports car, but done so entirely of fiber glass to keep the weight down, 600 pounds dry to be exact. The car was powered by a Harley-Davidson Knucklehead V-twin engine, but not just any Knucklehead V-twin, this one was also purpose built for Burke by tuner  C.B. Clausen. A man who was also no stranger to running Bonneville, but Clausen preferred his two wheel Harleys in doing so. Incorporating Harley components into the Super Shaker even further was the use of a H-D rear axle assembly bolted to the frame and driven by a H-D transmission. The front suspension was a Ford Anglia.

The custom would ultimately hit 151.38mph driven by Burke in August 1959 Bonneville Speed Trials. While it’s driving days were less after that finding fame in print it has been impeccably kept and restored when needed and returned to Bonneville to open the 2008 Bonneville Nationals. This piece of history now looks to add to its legacy again when it crosses the block at Mecum’s Phoenix auction in mid-March.
