GKN Provides Crucial Support to the Wayne State University EcoCAR 3 Team

Support provided by the sponsors of EcoCAR 3 is a crucial component to the success of each of the competing teams.  Over the course of the competition, teams are tasked with converting the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid electric vehicle without compromising the performance, safety and consumer appeal.  The Wayne State University EcoCAR 3 team is extremely grateful to the support from GKN, a sustaining competition-level sponsor. Working with industry sponsors, like GKN, is of great benefit to the team and its students as it allows them to work with industry products and tools that would not be available to them otherwise.

Watch the video below to learn more about how the WSU EcoCAR 3 will utilize GKN’s products and support:

EcoCAR 3 at the Electrical Vehicle Symposium

Last week, students from McMaster University and the University of Waterloo were given the opportunity to represent EcoCAR 3 at the 29thElectric Vehicle Symposium (EVS) in Montréal, Québec, Canada. EVS is the largest international electric vehicle conference and has been bringing together industry, government and academia to address technical, policy and market topics related to vehicle electrification since 1969. At the conference, team members were able to talk to industry professionals and even competition sponsors about EcoCAR 3 and their journey to transform a Camaro into a hybrid electric vehicle.

Check out some of the images from EVS below:

The Evolution of a Powertrain Transformation

Cranks of wrenches, spinning drills, and clanging metals were the sounds that filled the garage at Colorado State University (CSU) in the weeks leading up to competition. Vehicle disassembly was long underway as students removed the vehicle’s hood, doors, trunk, and the entirety of its interior – stripping a Camaro to its bones. CSU’s Vehicle Innovation Team made their way through the deconstruction phase of the Camaro’s transformation into a more fuel-efficient vehicle. The CSU Vehicle Innovation Team removed an existing powertrain and weeks later, the powertrain team implemented their new, more efficient design.

During the Year Two competition, CSU worked in the high voltage work area reassembling their battery pack and moved steadily through the Stage 1 and Stage 2 of Safety/Tech Inspections. Their team showed great resolve and true teamwork to get their vehicle systems up and running at their full potential.

Take a look at the CSU’s progress before and during competition:

Hayes for Days

Written By: Gavin Gros

Stephen Hayes has worked as the MSU EcoCAR 3 team’s Project Manager for both Year 1 and Year 2.  He has shown tremendous effort and enthusiasm over the course of his time serving his part in the program. With a positive spirit and work-focused attitude, he is as much of a friend to his teammates as he is a devoted manager. The MSU team would like to sincerely thank Stephen for all that he has done, along with all the time and energy he has invested in his work and in the team.

Whenever he has the chance, Stephen enjoys mountain biking with family/friends.  We are sure he has thoroughly enjoyed adventuring through Mississippi’s endless mountainous terrain each weekend!

Stephen also enjoys hiking/backpacking.  Give the man a nice long stick and a comfortable backpack and he is good to go for miles!

Snow skiing also happens to be one of Stephen’s favorite activities (I think we are seeing a trend here!). He even likes to test his videographer skills while simultaneously cruising down the mountainside.

Ever the outdoorsman, Stephen enjoys casting out and reeling in a big one. And by this we mean fishing, of course. A day by the water’s side is never a day lost!

MSUEcoCAR3_HayesforDays_Running_Image5

Biking, hiking, water life…. He has to love running too, right?!

MSUEcoCAR3_HayesforDays_GoKart_Image6

Stephen also enjoys racing go-carts against his friends.  Bravo on the ecoFRIENDLY go-cart, Stephen!

MSUEcoCAR3_HayesforDays_Gibbs_Image7

Who would Stephen be today without his right-hand man, Gibbs? The bond these two share truly transcends average love between man and animal. Awwww!

You can’t be in charge of a project like MSU EcoCAR 3 with being a spirited MSU fan. Stephen loves supporting his Dawg-family and rocking that maroon and white!

And of course, Stephen enjoys spending quality time with the ecoFAMILY he holds so dearly to his heart!

Last but most certainly not least, congratulations to Stephen Hayes and the MSU Project Management team for receiving 1st Place in the Project Management Category at the Year Two Competition!

A Tale of Go-Kart Efficiency: A High School Group’s Research on E10 and E85 Fuels

UT’s EcoCAR 3 team is supporting a Knoxville area high school as they have been experimenting with the efficiency of E85 and E10 gasoline when used in a go-kart. Bearden High School has a STEM Scholar Program that divides high school seniors based on their areas of STEM interest. Team Tennessee has been working with the engineering group to create a research project that the high schoolers can present in the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair later this school year.

UT_Blog5_Image1

For the research project, the Bearden group has been wondering about the difference in efficiency of E10 and E85 gasoline. To test this difference in efficiency, they borrowed a go-kart from Sir Goony’s Fun Times in Knoxville, met with Team Tennessee to design the project, and then finally ran their experiment in late February with the prediction that E10 gasoline would be more efficient than E85.

UT_Blog5_Image2

To conduct their experiment, the group filled the go-kart’s gas tank with E10 and calculated the volume of gasoline before they began driving.

UT_Blog5_Image3

Then they drove the go-kart around a circuit for 6 miles and then calculated the volume again to see how much fuel they burned.

UT_Blog5_Image4

The team then brought the go-kart to Alcoa Good Times,  a nearby powersports dealership, who guided the students through the process of replacing the carburetor with one that is compatible with E85.

UT_Blog5_Image5UT_Blog5_Image6

Then, the students measured the volume of the E85 gas tank, drove the go-kart on the same six-mile circuit to test it, and measured again, just as they did with the go-kart when it was using E10. To their surprise, the E85 was more efficient than the E10. This left the students scratching their heads and hypothesizing how they achieved this outcome. From here, Team Tennessee will help the students finish their research paper based on their hypotheses.

UT_Blog5_Image7

Regardless of whether or not their hypothesis was supported, the students enjoyed the project and gained valuable insight into the components of research. “This project is a way to see what research is really like – from reading books to actually testing the experiment,” said senior, Christina Paris, “I like the testing part probably the best, though.”

UT_Blog5_Image8

Team Tennessee is happy to support this program and to encourage high school students to take an interest automotive research. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to create and conduct a research project in high school,” said Team Tennessee communications manager, Emily King. “I’m glad to be included in this project and to have supported the students’ excitement around a STEM-related field. As graduate students, I think sometimes we get caught up in the details of our own research, and this project is a good reminder that at the end of the day, hopefully our research projects are insightful, but we definitely should be able to say that we had fun along the way.”
