Classic Sawhorse I’v

Classic Sawhorse I’ve found a sturdy sawhorse that’s great even if you have limited space. When I’m done working with them I just stack them on top of each other and store them out of the way. Here’s all it takes to build one horse: One 42-in.-long 2×6 for the top board Four 28-in.-long 1×8 boards for the legs Four 9-7/8-in.-long 1×8 boards for the gussets Thirty-six 2-in.wood screws. Welcome to the EcoCAR 3 Year Two Competition

blog one

It’s officially Day 1 of the Year Two Competition! EcoCAR 3 teams have arrived in Yuma, AZ at the GM Desert Proving Grounds (DPG) and will undergo various safety and technical inspections to qualify for on road vehicle testing. Teams will be evaluated on their vehicle’s dynamic safety, handling, and energy consumption in various events.

Teams received their Camaros in December of 2015 and have spent the last few months disassembling the existing powertrain and integrating their hybrid-electric designs into a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. The teams have an end goal of making the vehicle even more energy-efficient without losing high-performance and safety features Camaro buyers expect.

Now, teams will be putting their work to the test at the Year 2 competition. After a comprehensive Vehicle Design Review, teams will travel to San Diego, CA for the second stage of competition. In San Diego, teams will present over a dozen technical, communications and project management presentations about their work to judges. Stay tuned as we continue to share videos, photos and what teams are up to throughout competition on the Green Garage Blog.

Embry-Riddle Gears Up for Final Competition

ERAU_Embry-Riddle Gears Up for Final Competition_1

The Embry-Riddle EcoEagles are gearing up for final competition here in Daytona Beach.  The EcoEagles are biting at the bit to make their way to the Yuma, Arizona to the General Motors Desert Proving Grounds this weekend. The Embry-Riddle team will complete both dynamic and static events for the final competition. These events are very similar to the tests General Motors conducts on their very own vehicles before they hit the show room. All of the work that the EcoEagles have completed will essentially boil down to this week of events. The team has spent several hours re-checking their calculations, checking the torque on their bolts, and even checking the wiring of the vehicle compulsively. But, wait! …That’s not all.

After this week of testing, the team is off to the West Coast in the sunny San Diego, California where they are notoriously known for “staying classy.” In this sunny city, the teams will have the opportunity to present their hard work to the judges in the EcoCAR 3 competition. These judges range from competition organizers to individuals directly linked to the industry, as well as many of the competition-level sponsors. This part is crucial to the competition because of the need for the engineers, project managers, and communicators to be able to talk about their work. Presentations include where theams succeeded, needed help, and most importantly – what they learned throughout the second year of the EcoCAR 3 competition.

Unfortunately, we can’t take our whole fan base with us, but keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages as we will be posting as the competition nears. See below for our handles!

What Makes the Georgia Tech EcoCAR 3 Team Unique

What makes the Georgia Tech EcoCAR 3 team unique is not only our range of technical experience in various engineering fields, but a highly diverse leadership, each with a distinct background compassing all six inhabited continents and the furthest depths of engineering prowess.

Greg Chipman, our project manager, is one of the few chemical engineers in the GT EcoCAR 3 team. His background includes full fluency in Indonesian, where he served as a missionary for his church for two years.

Douglas Cox is our Lead Engineer. He brings with him not only a wealth of technical know-how, but a diverse worldview, having traveled to 11 countries during his time as a student.

Lee Sargent joined us as a graduate student from Mississippi State, bringing with him experience from Mississippi State’s own EcoCAR 2 team. Lee serves as our Electrical Engineering lead over the ESS assembly and high voltage systems.

The “Most Interesting Man at Penn State” Visits the PSU AVT

Recently, the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team had the pleasure of hosting Paul Ruskin for an informational presentation, followed by a question and answer session in the team’s senior capstone design class. Mr. Ruskin was formerly the OPP-Communications Coordinator for Penn State University and has been involved in the University for 28 years- not including his undergraduate time at the University. He is known around campus as being quite a character, having been featured on dozens of news stories- there’s even a parody of him on YouTube, declaring him “The Most Interesting Man in the World”- but for now, we’ll say Penn State.

PSU_TheMostInterestingManAtPSUVistsThePSUAVT_Image2    Mr. Ruskin began his presentation by providing the team with a history of his involvement at Penn State, including his various experiences with Advanced Vehicle Technologies. He continued to talk about his various worldwide travels, discoveries, and futuristic engineering suggestions that the PSU AVT could consider a few years down the line. Additionally, Mr. Ruskin advised students on how to get the best edge on our competition.

“If you all have the same mindset and are doing similar things, look in diversity to find your success,” he said, “Don’t be in the line everyone else is- step out, go for the strange point of view to succeed.”

All 42 attendees were engaged during the presentation, asking Mr. Ruskin several questions about his beliefs surrounding the future of hybrid-electric vehicles, research, and how Penn State can play an important role in the automotive industry moving forward.

“I believe the AVT is going to make a mark,” he said, “there’s a possibility if you’re able to make the right discoveries and do the right things, Pennsylvania could become the new Silicon Valley of transportation.”

Mr. Ruskin continued to emphasize the components that Pennsylvania has to create incredible success in the automotive industry, stressing that within the next 50 years, it’s reasonable to believe that Pennsylvania could be the new Detroit because of the type of work and research performed in the state.

“Some of the things you’re doing now will be the technology on Mars in 50 years. What you’re doing now can reach other planets,” he said, “no one will remember the score of a football game on February 22, 1957, but they may remember what you developed.”

While Mr. Ruskin has personally witnessed the advancements of HEVs on the Penn State campus, his enthusiasm and interest in our project was truly contagious. We are so appreciative of Mr. Ruskin taking the time to visit us and learn more about our project, and remind us how important our hard work really is. Thank you for visiting, Mr. Ruskin!

University High School Students are Back for More!

Students of all ages who are studying STEM are paving the way for the future. From finding a cure for some of the world’s most devastating diseases, to creating artificial intelligence and perfecting the autonomous vehicle, Generations Y and Z are very likely to be the ones responsible for these incredible strides.

The students who are studying engineering at University High School in Morgantown, WV, are a prime example of STEM’s bright future and the amazing achievements to come.

In the fall, WVU’s EcoCAR 3 team visited this group of highly intelligent students to teach them more about hybrid vehicle technologies. They were excited to learn about the EcoCAR 3 competition and could not wait to see the Camaro once it arrived.

When it did, we invited the students to the team garage, and when they saw the Camaro on the lift, they lit up with excitement.

Our team gave the high schoolers a tour of the facilities and talked to them about our hybrid architecture. This served to see how much they remembered from our fall visit to their school and to refresh their memories about project specifics.

The students were tasked with labeling engine parts that would soon be integrated into our Camaro. This got them up and moving and allowed them to ask EcoCAR students about the components.WVU_University High School Students are back for more_Image3

After finding and labeling the engine components, the team asked the UHS students to give their opinions about the EcoCAR 3 competition and whether or not they would consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle in the future.

We couldn’t let these prospective engineers leave without a souvenir photo with the Camaro! It was a wonderful way to document their visit, which is something both our team and student visitors will remember for a very long time.
