‘Top Gear’ Taps Ken Block In New Season Teaser

With casting shakeups aplenty in Top Gear‘s recent years the brand has struggled to return the show to its glory days, but it looks like Ken Block is here to help. The newest teaser shows hosts Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid on the run from Ken Block. Block seems a logical choice to tease the upcoming season with his insane driving ability and perhaps more importantly to Top Gear his loyal online video following.

Where Are They Now: MSU’s Kyle Crawford

Written By: Carrie Kilgore

Over the past 13 years, Mississippi State University (MSU) has competed in multiple Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs), starting with Challenge X and leading to the current competition, EcoCAR 3. Students who participate on the team get a unique hands-on experience in an industry-modeled program that provides them with diverse skills when entering the career field. This is especially true for an MSU alum, Kyle Crawford, who utilized the knowledge and experience he gained while participating in Challenge X to further his career post college.

Kyle Crawford is from Columbus, Mississippi and earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at MSU in 2005. While continuing his education as a graduate student pursuing a Master’s chemical engineering, Crawford joined Challenge X in the fall of 2005. He competed in Year 2 and Year 3 of the Challenge X competition and was responsible for the diesel emissions systems which included diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction.

“Working on Challenge X as my graduate school project was attractive because it provided a very practical way to apply classroom learnings in a way that is relevant,” Crawford explains.

Because of his hard work and experience with Challenge X, Crawford landed a full-time job with General Motors, one of the headlining sponsors for Challenge X. Crawford now works for PACCAR, another competition-level sponsor, at the Columbus, Mississippi plant as a project engineer. His main responsibility is to oversee the implementation of the MY21 engine at the plant. Challenge X helped Crawford gain more understanding of cars and engines, which has given him a more diverse skillset.MSU_Wherearetheynow_Image2

“The experience of taking ownership of a project as a student was the start of a key trait in the workplace as it taught me about driving for results,” says Crawford.

For the past two years, Crawford has attended final competitions on behalf of PACCAR and participates as a judge or a recruiter. When asked if he would recommend participating in AVTCs to current college students, Crawford explains that he would absolutely encourage students to be involved.

“There is no better program at exposing students to working on practical, applicable, real-world programs than AVTCs. In addition, there are so many industries involved that provide a great way for learning, networking, and a good opportunity to find a company to start your career,” says Crawford.

As an AVTC alum, Crawford says that the best advice he can give to current team members of EcoCAR 3 is to utilize every resource that they’re given throughout the competition and always seek out advice. Crawford points out that competition-level sponsors are there to help teams when they get stuck or need a different perspective, so students should always take advantage of the opportunity to network and collaborate.MSU_Wherearetheynow_Image3

Like many other AVTC alumni, Crawford has created great memories through his participation on the MSU Challenge X team. When asked if there was any memory that stood out the most to him, Crawford was able to reflect back to Year 3 of Challenge X when the MSU team received 1st place overall in Final Competition.

“It was the first AVTC that Mississippi State participated in, and winning really made us proud to achieve that for our school. That was one of those moments when all the hard work and sleepless nights paid off for everyone,” explains Crawford.

AVTCs, like Challenge X and EcoCAR 3, take pride in the students that utilize this program and reap the rewards later in life. Kyle Crawford is just one of many AVTC alumni that have excelled in the workplace after participating in this unique program. The Mississippi State University EcoCAR 3 team is proud to have an alum like Crawford to not only represent the school, but also the team within a competition-level sponsor like Paccar.

200+ MPH All-Electric Genovation GXE To Debut At CES

Like it or not, electric cars are coming, but thankfully with companies like Genovation Cars you won’t have to sacrifice the styling you know and love to go green.

The Maryland based company will head to the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next week in Las Vegas, NV to debut their all-electric GXE. Standing for Genovation Extreme Electric the car stems from a C7 Corvette and completely swaps to an all-electric powertrain making it not just a green alternative, but a missile around the track.

Delivering a pretty astonishing 800hp and 700lb.-ft. of torque the GXE has a top-speed of 209mph. Also worth nothing is the seven speed manual gearbox option which is not only rare these days in general, but virtually non-exigent in electric cars. The company is limiting production to just 75 units which are expected to carry a hefty price tag.

Announcing the Year 4 Competition

EC3 Y4 Comp Blog 1

The culmination of the EcoCAR 3 series is underway, and students are in the final stretch of reaching the 99% VDP milestone as they execute activities and reach for the Year Four finish line.

This year the Competition will take place in three different cities from May 10-22, 2018.  Events will kick off at GM’s Desert Proving Grounds in Yuma, AZ, where the student Camaros will undergo rigorous safety inspections.  Once the vehicles pass the first testing stage, they will begin a series of dynamic events such as emissions testing, drive quality and handling.

From there teams will move to southern California for the second leg of the Competition.  In Fontana, Calif. teams will have an opportunity to test their Camaros at the Auto Club Speedway racetrack where they will compete in an Autocross, Acceleration & Braking, and the Consumer Appeal event. After the racetrack activities, teams will present to industry and government judges in six different categories and for several sponsored awards in Pomona, Calif. Once presentations wrap up, teams will hit the open road and cover a 150 mile course through Los Angeles County public roads where the Camaros will be scored in every-day driving applications including city, highway and fuel consumption.

The Competition finish line is in Hollywood, CA on May 22nd where students will have the opportunity to display their hard work over the last four years to the media.  Later that evening, winners in more than 40 judged categories, and the overall first place team will be announced at an awards ceremony.

Stay tuned for more exciting Year Four Competition details at EcoCAR3.org.

1 Of 3 Yenko Turbo Z Stage IIs Ever Made Up For Grabs

In 1981 the Yenko-era in its original form was coming to an end and this Camaro was representative of that. This 1981 Yenko Turbo Z would become one of just 19 built that year and represent the last of the Yenko Camaros and the end of their partnership with Chevrolet.

Slated for around 200 units just 19 would find their way into production with an even smaller number, three, of these Stage Its being produced. Surviving some 38 years this Camaro was no stranger to the streets acquiring 38,852 actual miles during that time. A new turbocharger for the ’81 one would help shave three-seconds off the quarter-mile time verse the regular 350 CI Z28 engine and feature a “Turbo 350 transmission and G80 Positraction 3.08:1 final gearing.” All the while in compliance with emissions standards in all 50 states.

This legendary Yenko will be auctioned off in Florida this weekend at Mecum Kissimmee and stands to become the prime jewel of any Yenko collection or any collection for that matter.
