Daily Monkey | 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T

Car names tend to invoke power or magnificence, but in the case of the Dodge Coronet it’s name is much more benign. A “lesser crown” a coronet is not grandiose in nature, but then again why would a 1950s full-size eight passenger Dodge be anything other than just that? It would be years before the Coronet would evolve in design and performance to the late 1960’s variation engrained in most memories.

By 1967 Dodge had come a long way and the Coronet name was adapting to reflect the upgrades with a R/T trim and Hemi. The Coronet had officially outgrown its name. The ’67 R/T was a two-door available in either a hardtop or convertible and came stock with Chrysler’s largest engine of that time, a 440-cid V8. The Hemi, just a year old, was an option for the ’67 Coronet.

Richard And Best Beards In Dallas Raise Money For Men’s Health Initiatives

On Saturday, February 18th The Rustic hosted the second annual Best Beards in Dallas showcase benefitting the Movember Foundation USA. Additionally, the event celebrated the release of photographer Brent Baxter’s second volume of his best beards in Dallas coffee table book which features numerous local icons and also helps raise money for men’s health initiatives.

Some 600 people in attendance were treated to beard trims by Brass Tracks and BEDHEAD by TIGI provided on-site styling. No beard? No problem. Quaker City Night Hawks and Loyal Sally took to the stage providing tunes deep into the night. Everyone was given an extra show courtesy of Richard Rawlings when he offered the Loyal Sally front men an additional $20,000 for the cause courtesy of the Gas Monkey Foundation in exchange for cutting their five year old beards. Accepting the wager Richard had the honor of first cut on the duo before turning the trimmers over to the professionals.

The evening was capped by honorable mention medals being awarded and the presentation of the “Best Beard in Dallas 2017” trophy being presented to William Mills.

Daily Monkey | 1962 Ford F-100

In 1960 Ford launched the fourth generation of their flagship F-Series truck. This would also be the year that Ford would introduce the unibody to the F-Series. The plan was that by having the cab and box being one continuous piece they could streamline the assembly process from stamping to welding to the paint shop. While the process did work and would result in cost savings it was not well received by the consumer and was dropped midway through the fourth generations six year run.

1962 would be the last full year the unibody F-100 was produced and this restored Barrett-Jackson vet is a perfect example of a unibody truck. Known as “Red Rocket” the F-100 is powered by a 468ci big-block V8, has power steering and disc brakes. Additionally, this ’62 features Flowmaster exhaust and Ridler Pro-Touring wheels.

Automotive Legend, Gene Winfield, Visits GMG

It’s not uncommon for athletes, musicians, businessmen to swing through the garage when they’re in town, but GMG recently had perhaps the most meaningful guests in recent memory stop by, Mr. Gene Winfield. Even if you don’t know Gene by name odds are good that you’ve seen his work on multiple occasions.

As a veteran fabricator Gene has created many classics like Richard’s “King T” and inspired generation after generation of fabricators including Richard and the Monkeys. Gene’s work would catch Hollywood’s eye and launch a film and television career that would expose his work to millions and solidify it in popular culture forever. On the small screen Gene’s creations were seen on Get Smart, Batman, Star Trek and more throughout the ‘60s and would help him break onto the big screen in 1982 helping create 22 cars for Blade Runner and sparking a film career that would go on to include The Last Starfighter, Trancers and Robocop.

Gene’s work would later find itself as inspiration for a Hot Wheels Redline edition car called the “Hot Heap Roadster.” It was, in fact, the “King T” Richard bought at Barret-Jackson Las Vegas 2016 that Hot Wheels would base their designs on. Gene’s “King T” was designed and built by himself and Don Tognotti over a two-year period from 1962 to 1964. The car was restored in 2007 and repainted to match its original Wild Lavender Pearl color by Gene Winfield himself.

About 52 years after completing the “King T” Gene found himself again behind the wheel at GMG and Richard riding shotgun with his automotive hero.
