Oldies But Goodies, Forza Drops New Cars For ‘Vintage Week’

In what Forza is calling “Vintage Week” of their car dump for the upcoming Forza Motorsport 7 we are blessed with some real gems. Not to say that the prior patch of over a hundred cars was to be scoffed at, but this current list of 60 is much more in our wheelhouse. The selection of cars will represent both pre and post-war cars from around the world and run the spectrum from racecars to cruisers.

The Archaeologist Combines Gin And Vintage Harley-Davidson Parts, Sláinte! [Video]

Keep your flakes of gold, worms, snakes or whatever else maybe going into liquor bottles. The Archaeologist gin comes infused with the parts of three classic Harley-Davidsons: 1939 Flathead, 1947 Knucklehead and 1962 Panhead. The brainchild of motorcycle fabricator Uwe Ehinger, nicknamed The Archaeologist for his extensive searches for old and rare bikes, the gins’ story does not end with the parts, but rather just begins.

His travels brought him face to face with these three rare bikes and with each encounter a unique story to accompany the gin. From uncovering the Flathead wasting away in Mexico, a military relic, the Knucklehead in Chile which was once the delivery vehicle for a German pharmacist and finally the Panhead in South Korea. Each story is as unique as the gin and accompanies the custom bottles for the buyer to have their origin stories in detail.

Ehinger’s attention to detail for bikes carries over to the spirit. Its packaging uniquely designed and put together by hand, including the use of a historic Heidelberg printing press. Unfortunately, keeping in line with the visuals of the gin, it will set you back a pretty penny, around $1,000 USD.

Volkswagen Bus Market Growing, 1960 23-Window Samba Sells For $120,000

Mecum Denver delivered quite a treat in the form of a 1960 Volkswagen 23-window Samba bus. Not only did it end up being one of the most expensive cars sold at the auction, it helped to further solidify the VW bus as an icon.

Ever famous in modern culture from a representation of the ‘60s to dads across the U.S. pointing them out with an anecdote on road trips, the VW bus has remained popular through the years. However, popularity in the automotive world is not always synonymous with value… until now. Going for a cool $120,000 in Denver, this bus is a perfect example of their increasing value.

In fact, over the past three years the value of a 1960 concours level restoration 23-window samba has increased nearly $70,000 from $87,500 to $154,000. And over $20,000 of that was in the first-quarter of 2017 alone. While concours lever cars aren’t always the most common, this VW model is showing growth across the board, according to Hagerty, especially in the first quarter of 2017, as well.

Hard to say for sure without seeing the Mecum Denver bus in person if it was a steal at $120,000 or if on the high-end of the “excellent” condition market, but at either cost the market doesn’t seem to be slowing on the Volkswagen 23-window Samba bus.

CSU Sponsor Spotlight: Siemens PLM Software

EcoCAR 3 sponsors contribute to the education of students by donating products, providing training, and fostering a cooperative mentoring environment for teams.

Sustaining-level competition sponsor, Siemens PLM Software, is among one of the many vital sponsors that has contributed to the success of the CSU EcoCAR 3 team. Siemens PLM software is a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software.

PLM software is a collection of tools that allow engineers to make decisions that are both efficient and cost effective with their design.  CSU EcoCAR 3’s composite team relied on Computer Aided Design (CAD), which is the use of computer programs to create two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) graphical representations of physical objects, to create a muffler that was 55% lighter than the stock muffler. CAD allowed the team to make 3D models of the muffler to help determine how to create an efficient muffler using lightweight carbon fiber material.

The Siemens software allows the team to create designs in a fast and effective manner. Siemens provides more than just their software to the EcoCAR 3 competition, they also provide hands-on assistance that plays a key role in winter and fall workshops.

Earlier this year, Siemens PLM engineer, Marilyn Tomlin, even visited the CSU EcoCAR 3 team in the spring to ensure students were making the most out of CAD software.

Marilyn observed the team’s muffler, as well as other additional innovations developed by the composites team. She then received a tour of the Powerhouse Energy Campus and discussed the innovations of CSU’s EcoCAR 3 team with mechanics team member, Cody Knobel.

The use of Siemens tools has also became crucial for students in the classroom. Recent CSU engineering graduates presented their senior design projects to a panel of professors and judges, highlighting designs and analysis that required the use of PLM software.

Working with industry sponsors, such as Siemens, is of great benefit to the team as it allows each member to work with industry products and tools that would not be available to them otherwise. The CSU EcoCAR 3 team is gracious for the continued support from Siemens and look forward to continue this partnership as we enter Year 4.
