100th Indy 500 Winning Car To Go To Winning Bidder

Your only memory of the hundredth running of the Indy 500 is surely Gas Monkey Energy’s Sage Karam piloting the No. 24 Chevrolet… I kid, while that was fun for all, the show was undoubtedly stolen by rookie driver and winner Alexander Rossi.

After winning the 500 and spending some time in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Rossi’s 2012 Dallara DW12 Honda could now spend a lot of time in your garage. Driving for Andretti Herta Autosport with Curb Agajanian this is the car to cross the bricks in front of a crowd of nearly 350,000 people solidifying its place in history.

Though winning in 2016 at the Indy 500 the no. 37 chassis began its career in 2012 with drivers Alex Tagliani, Jack Hawksworth and Gabby Chaves all having stints behind the wheel. However, no name, aside from possibly yours, will ever match that of its final driver Rossi. The instant icon is being offered in Monterey next month and is, literally, one-of-a-kind.

Fastest Two-Wheeled Mile Set At Festival Of Speed

Now that the Guinness World Records is no longer a tangible book, but more a page on a website, the possibilities for records are apparently endless. Take this fastest two-wheeled mile record set at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as an example.

Driver Terry Grant piloted his Range Rover Sport SVR to a time of 2:24.5 besting the old record. What does this mean? Quite literally nothing, but it makes for a fun watch!

Where Are They Now: Catching Up with Ohio State’s Nick Tomczak

Ohio State University has participated in AVTCs since the early 1990s (check out the history of the program here!) and we’ve had a large number of people coming through the program. Whether we’re talking about those who were there for our first years of participation in the Natural Gas Vehicle Challenge (all the way back in the early ‘90s) or the few team members who graduated last year, alumni of our team have been invaluable for the contributions that they have brought while on our team.

Nick Tomczak, one of our more recent graduates of the team, was on the team for three years and was our Project Manager through Years 2 and 3 of EcoCAR 3. While in this position, Nick was awarded with 2^nd place in Year 2 and 1^st Place in Year 3 in overall Project Management, as well as the Best Competition Project Status presentation in Year 3. He brought a great energy to the team and was always ready to help out when you needed it.

Now, Nick works as an Area Manager at an Amazon Fulfillment Center in Kent, Washington. We were able to catch up with Nick and get an idea of where his skills have taken him and how EcoCAR 3 has helped benefit him as he moves forward.

Us: What does a standard day look like for you?

Nick: For me, a standard day consists of motivating, mentoring and coaching a team of around 150 associates while ensuring the highest levels of safety, quality and engagement.  Additionally, I ensure customer orders make it out in time and work on continuous improvement projects. Although there are many day-to-day operational tasks, no two days ever look the same.

Us: What skills did you learn from EcoCAR that have benefitted you in your current job?

Nick: The ability to lead and motivate teams, present to executives, and generate reports. The skills that I have learned in EcoCAR prepared me to excel in my current role.

 

Us: What was your favorite part of the EcoCAR 3 competition?

Nick: My favorite part of EcoCAR 3 was sharing competition goals and objectives with the community and leading my team to three 1^st place finishes!

We are incredibly thankful to all of our previous team members for the dedication and drive that they showed while on our team. We’re very proud of our alumni who continue to be leaders in their industries and continue to represent Ohio State in a very positive light.

Hand-Built This Is One Of 99 Ever Produced

“They just don’t make ’em like they used to,” said anyone who has ever liked older anything, but in the case of this 1959 Cadillac Eldorado by Pinin Farina… C’mon!

The sheer fact that the car was hand-built by Pinin Farina should alone be testament to the above, but on top of that it was one of the most expensive cars in the world back in 1959. One could literally write a book on Pinin Farina and the impact they’ve had on automotive design, but, in short, think of the Italian design firm back in the day as a sort of freelance designer. Hence why you often see there name tied to so many makes and models, granted there is more behind the scenes politics at play, but that will suffice for now. Of these hand-built Eldorados Pinin Farina would make just 99 with this being a rare example and one of the finest at that.

It features a 345hp 390cu.-in. V8 with a Hydramatic transmission, but performance and design is just a fraction of what makes a car the most expensive in the world, the rest is luxury. This ’59 features factory air conditioning, “all available power luxuries” and original interior. The exterior has been repainted and color matched to the original Ebony Black, a black so dark they apparently named it twice.

This fine example of automotive design will head to auction at RM Sotheby’s Auburn Falls auction in late August.

This Goodwood Hillclimb Is The Wildest Thing You’ll See Today

Admittedly no expert when it comes to sidecars, let alone racing that involves them, but I do know cool when I see it and this video from the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed is the epitome of it.

Watching this Kawasaki 1100 from 1973 howl up the March estate driveway would be reason enough to watch, but adding what looks like (and more or less is) a buddy hanging on for dear life takes it to the next level.

Split Window Corvette Heads To Auction In PA

Once as divisive as its rear window, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window has become one of the more sought after years of Vettes.

For one year only the split window graced the world with it’s unique rear. The same rear which would also lead to its demise as it created an obstruction for the driver. A prime example of this ’63 now heads to auction in Harrisburg, PA. White with a black interior this Corvette features a 327 V8 engine with 300hp and four speed transmission.

This classic is part of the Peery Collection which will bring 11 cars in total to the Mecum auction or nearly a quarter of the family’s collection.
