WSU’s EcoCAR 3 Team Celebrates Diversity

Wayne State University’s mission and core values all have a common theme: diversity. WSU’s diversity and inclusion mission states, “our rich multicultural experiences enable us to develop exportable programs and curricula, which provide leadership in a multicultural society.” With an identity that is inextricably linked with the city of Detroit, WSU prides itself in engaging and promoting the various cultural identities within the city.

The EcoCAR3 team at WSU, The Hybrid Warriors, fully celebrates the core values and the diversity and inclusion missions at WSU. The Hybrid Warriors have 29 members and 73% of the team is made up of international students. This year’s team has members from six different countries. Even the Hybrid Warriors car is celebrating the team’s diversity with a flag from each home country of a current or previous team member featured on the trunk.

The WSU EcoCAR3 team prides itself in celebrating its diversity. The Hybrid Warriors believes that each member brings a unique perspective to the team. Featured below are two members of our Controls Team, Miriam Di Russo and Vraj Modi, working together in the WSU EcoCAR3 garage.

The Hybrid Warriors celebrate age, educational background, and gender diversity. With members from the College of Engineering and The College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts, the Hybrid Warriors represent six different degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A diverse team with a wide variety of expertise provides a platform for the Hybrid Warriors’ success as a team! As the Hybrid Warriors continue through year four of the EcoCAR 3 competition, they will continue to embrace their diversity. While each team member is different and unique, they come together to form one Warrior Strong team!

British Icon Morgan To Make All-Electric EV3 UK 1909 Edition

Partnering with fellow British brand, Selfridges, Morgan will bring to market a limited-edition run on an all-electric, zero-emmisons 3 wheeler.

The EV3 or UK 1909 Edition as it’s known will be limited to just 19, an ode to the year in which both companies were founded. It will carry a range of 120-150 miles and a top-speed of 90mph all while maintaining the classic styling which made the Morgan 3 Wheeler an icon.

Where Are They Now: UTK’s Jessica Boles

Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTC’s) Team Tennessee alumna, Jessica Boles, participated in the EcoCAR 3 series during Year 1 as her senior design project. After graduating with her masters, Jessica interned with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is pursing her Ph.D. in power electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Now in her first year of her Ph.D., Boles is conducting research in the design of DC-DC converters that connect the high voltage battery pack to the low voltage bus of an Electric Vehicle (EV) or Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV).  She and her colleagues’ goal is “to reduce the size of these converters without sacrificing performance so that they take up less space in the vehicle itself.” Jessica was even granted the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship for her studies.

Looking back to her time on team Tennessee, Jessica says, “EcoCAR 3 gave me the opportunity to directly apply concepts from the courses I was taking right as I was learning them.” She was recruited by Dr. Costinett, the team Tennessee electrical faculty advisor, to serve on the electrical team for her senior design project. Jessica went on to become the electrical team lead where she led the design and prototype of a DC-DC converter, which is much like the one in the Camaro now. Her role on EcoCAR 3 lead her to pursue her Ph.D. in power electronics.

During her time at the University of Tennessee, Jessica interned with EcoCAR 3 competition sponsor, Siemens. While on Team Tennessee, Jessica received the General Motors Outstanding Woman in Engineering Award, the University of Tennessee Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Leadership Award, and founded the WomEngineers Day on the university’s campus. Through her efforts to connect and encourage women in engineering, Jessica has truly impacted the community.

Aubrey Casey, a current member of the EcoCAR 3 team, describes how Jessica helped her find a career path suited for her. Aubrey began college majoring in Biology, then she met Jessica through the university’s club tennis team. Aubrey says, “I made what has to be the most terrifying and ultimately the best decision of my life this far, and switched to the College of Engineering. I wouldn’t have been able to make that momentous change without Jessica’s support and faith. Her passion for her work and her radiant positivity for the field of engineering, and most distinctly, for integrating women into engineering has positively impacted my career and countless other students’ paths. Jessica’s story epitomizes the potential and opportunity the field of Engineering has, and not just for the chosen few, but for anyone who has the courage to try.”

Today, Jessica continues to be passionate about her education in power electronics and recruiting women to engineering. She left a lasting impact on team Tennessee and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Any Of These Three Children’s Cars Would Buy Our Love

Don’t get me wrong, I loved my Power Wheels Wrangler, but c’mon! These three children’s cars head to auction with price tags expected to be over five figures.

The assortment of cars spans the globe from Germany to Italy and America with Porsche, Ferrari and Shelby options, respectively. The Porsche 936 features a five-hp Briggs and Stratton engine and two-speed transmission, the Ferrari 640 F1-89 features a 50-cc engine and top speed of 25mph and the Shelby 289 Cobra a 110-cc and speeds of 40mph. All three will be auctioned in January at RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction.

Morgan Motor Company Presents A New Pilsner

You know them for their crazy Morgan 3 Wheeler and now you’ll know them for their beer. Morgan Motor Company and Friday Beer Co. have brought a new beer to market, the Morgan Motor Co.No.29 Pils.

Brewed by Friday Beer the No. 29 is a Czech style pilsner with a smooth texture which the company attributes to using, “one of the world’s purest spring waters” and includes traditional malts and European hops. The No. 29 joins the brands pre-existing lineup consisting of: Morgan 3 Wheeler Dark Mild Ale, Morgan Aero 8 Rye Ale and Morgan 4/4 Blonde Ale.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Revealed Before NAIAS

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is the latest in a string of releases in advance of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in mid-January. Joining the Chevrolet Silverado which made a surprise debut this past weekend, the Cherokee looks to get a jump start on press prior to its official reveal. Though not a major remodel year the 2019 did get a bit of a facelift, particaulray in the doing away with the split lights of the prior year.

Via Jeep:
The most capable mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) boasts a new, authentic and more premium design, along with even more fuel-efficient powertrain options. Additional images and complete vehicle information will be available January 16, 2018, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Abandoned Cars, Speedcross Set To Join NFS Payback Today

Need for Speed Payback will see a variety of updates to the game beginning December 19th, including: abandoned cars, Speedcross, BMW M Performance parts, Speedlists – Drift Runs and steering wheel support.

Beginning Tuesday users will be able to start claiming abandoned cars around Fortune City from a list which includes:Mazda RX-7 Spirit R, Volvo 242DL, Volvo Amazon P130, Plymouth Barracuda, Nissan Skyline 2000 GTR and the BMW M3 Evolution II E30.

Take control of Mac and his Mini John Cooper Works Countryman and compete in the Speedcross Competition, a competition which will take you to, “sixteen brand new events, split across four zones; Canyon, Airfield, Construction and Ember valley.”

BMW M Performance Parts and steering wheel support are less exciting, but nevertheless are in their own right, while Drift Runs is like you would have seen before for single player, but now for up to eight.

Teen Delivers Spot-On ‘Garage Rehab’ Parody Video

While many were curled up on the couch with family in a food coma or braving the mall for Black Friday deals, 17-year-old Maisie Merlock and her dad, Frank, were working on creating the be all and end all of Garage Rehab parodies.

“Me and my dad were in the car driving,” said Maisie adding, “I was quoting [Garage Rehab] to him and thought ‘why don’t we just do a video?’” And that’s just what they did, publishing the video to her YouTube channel on the morning of Monday, December 18 and reaching the hosts of the show by that afternoon.

And like any great parody, it stems from love. “Me and my dad watch all the time, it’s our show,” said Maisie, but that didn’t stop her from having some fun with the hosts.

On Richard: “He has his handkerchief he never uses, but always has.”

On Russell: “He’s got that New York accent. I do a ton of accents, [Maisie then goes into spot on British, Scottish and German accents.]”

On Chris: “He always talks about ‘work flow’ so I thought it would be funny to say ‘work flow’ about a dozen times in a sentence.”

While Maisie did enjoy the lack of a wig that went into playing blonde Chris she said she did have the most fun with Richard and his catchphrases like, “Get you some of that!” And when asked about the challenges of playing each host Maisie responded, “I’m an actress, so that’s kinda what I do.” That she does and very well at that.

Chevy Unveils Next-Gen Silverado In A Big Way [VIDEO]

The 2019 Silverado 1500 is all new from the ground up and leverages Chevrolet’s experience building more than 85 million dependable, long-lasting pickups. It also reflects feedback from more than 7,000 people on what they wanted in their next truck — the most customer research in the company’s history.

The 2019 Silverado’s strong, modern design advances Chevrolet’s history of industry-leading pickup design. It’s a legacy built on decades of experience with models such as the Advance Design trucks of the 1950s and the C/K series of the 1960s. Those trucks set the standard for pickup design in their eras, and currently are some of the most coveted vintage trucks on the market. The next-generation Silverado is poised to change the face of trucks again, with a breakthrough design that is unmistakably Chevrolet.

The new Silverado also delivers improved capability and performance. For example, a higher-grade alloy is used in the roll-formed, high-strength-steel bed floor, contributing to a bed that is more functional and lighter weight. This use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing is evident throughout the Silverado, resulting in a significant reduction in total vehicle weight and improved performance in many measures.

As no two truck customers are alike, the next-gen Silverado will offer an expanded range of models, more engine/transmission combinations and more technology and convenience features to help customers find their ideal truck.

The new Silverado LT Trailboss is one of eight 2019 Silverado models. It integrates the off-road equipment of the Z71 package as well as a two-inch suspension lift. Unlike aftermarket lift kits, the Trailboss suspension is fully tested, validated and warrantied by Chevrolet.

The 2019 Silverado will make its public debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, exactly 100 years after the first Chevrolet trucks were delivered to customers.

1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe By Ghia

A lot can be said about this car, but in short, it’s beautiful and everyone needs to be aware of its existence. Debuted as a show car by Ferrari the car would then be acquired by the President of Argentina, Juan Peron.

It is reported that it was at its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1952 that President Peron first saw the 212 Inter he would later own. The car itself would first come to life earlier that same year by Ferrari and custom coach builder Ghia. It was Ghia that would be responsible for the styling and as a result the Virgil Exner design cues of the time are noticeable throughout the car.

There is a near endless amount of history that can be said about this car, and certainly worth a read here, but until then just bask in its glory.

Rare 1970 Yenko Chevrolet Deuce To Be Auctioned

A rare car and even rarer Yenko, this 1970 Deuce is just 1 of 53 produced in that year. In fact, 1970 was the only year the Nova would get the Yenko Duece treatment with just five existing in this Fathom Blue automatic version.

The car would utilize the new for 1970, LT1 engine, an engine which Chevy would reserve otherwise for the Corvette and Camaro Z28. Capable of producing 350/360hp and 380lb.-ft. of torque these were powerful engines and coupled with Turbo 400 automatic transmission make it quite desirable to this day. In fact, a different sold at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale earlier this year for $110,000 and this one projected to top that when it goes to auction in early 2018.
