BMW Restores One-Of-A-Kind 1600 GT Convertible

It should go without saying that we love seeing older cars restored to their former glory and no one is better at doing that than the car’s original manufacturers. Case and point, this BMW 1600 GT convertible prototype.

The finished product speaks for itself, but what you can’t see is the years of work that apprentices who are part of BMW’s vocational training team put in to restoring it. Under the watchful eye of their trainers the crew completed the work at the same Dingolfing plant that gave birth to the car in 1967.

In fact, the factory produced two examples that year, but when the pair set out for a test drive one would fall victim to an accident and was scrapped leaving this as the only 1600 GT convertible as the only surviving example. The car was then gifted by the manufacturer to their biggest shareholder, Herbert Quandt. Herbert’s family would then own the car for years before letting it enter the private market where it was said a fashion model once owned it, a business man and ultimately Munich-based Allianz Centre for Engineering. It was the latter which BWM Group Classic was able to strike a deal with the restore the car to its original glory.

Toyo Gets In The Christmas Spirit With 900HP Pro4 Truck

Toyo Tires, in a partnership with King Shocks and Monster Energy, has dropped their Christmas video starring Kyle LeDuc in “A LeDuc Christmas.”

In the “Gymkhana” style the internet has come to know and love the video follows five-time Lucas Oil Off-Road champion LeDuc from Christmas tree farm to home. The only catch is that the tree is strapped to the top of his 900-horsepower Pro4 truck and he lives so off the grid that this would be pornographic to Ted Kaczynski.

The action is, as you would imagine, awesome, but the real surprise is the acting at the end. Not sure if it’s his real wife or not, but there is definitely a believability to the exchange. Enjoy this fun little pre-holiday workday time waster below!

First Production 2020 Supra Will Head To Auction

Barrett-Jackson snagged another first. In what is becoming commonplace, the auction house secured another first off the line car to be auctioned for charity. This time the car in question is the 2020 Toyota Supra VIN 20201.

A new Japanese sports car won’t be the apple of everyone’s eye, then again what car is, when it crosses the block on Saturday, January 19th, but it should still bring big money. And the bigger the better as one-hundred percent of the hammer price will go toward benefiting the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.

The 2020 Supra, as a model, will make it’s debut just days prior at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 14th. Once the Supra is unveiled at the show VIN 20201 will then be unveiled to the auction crowd, but is said it is to, “be factory-finished with a matte gray exterior, red mirror caps and matte black wheels. Inside, the Supra will be just as unique, with a red interior and carbon-fiber inserts noting its designation as the first global A90 Supra.” More details are sure to emerge following the NAIAS debut.

Diesel Brothers’ Build Heads To Barrett-Jackson

Fast N’ Loud’s Discovery brothers, The Diesel Brothers have a show build of their own crossing the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction early next year.

The 1969 Chevrolet C10 was built on season three of the Discovery show for Charity Air Ambulance. This insane build features a roll cage with a removable floor, “so the entire cab can be lifted off.” Despite that added touch and its visually stunning demeanor the really noteworthy elements come by way of the trucks performance. The auction listing states it’s, “powered by a fully built LBZ Twin-Turbo Duramax diesel 6.6-liter race engine producing an estimated 800-1000hp and 1500 ft/lbs of torque that can hold 60-80 pounds of boost.”

Additionally, the performance elements tie into the trucks looks with a single turbo out of the hood custom painted to match the truck. Given this truck was a show worthy show build everything about it has been revamped making it one slick C10… Including the addition of a line lock so you know this thing is capable of some epic burnouts and you know how we love a good burnout around here.

The Scottsdale auction will take place January 12-20 with this Chevy going across the stage on Saturday, January 18th.

Mississippi Museum To Close, Send 175+ Cars To Auction

The Tupelo Automobile Museum is closing and after a quick Google search learned that Tupelo is a town in Northeast Mississippi of 38,114. It is also the birthplace of Elvis, home to The Elvis Presley Museum and until next spring the home to an extensive car collection house at the Tupelo Automobile Museum.

Opening in 2002 the museum’s history dates back to 1974 when founder Frank Spain bought his first antique car. After that he would spend nearly three decades curating the collection, along with Max Berryhill, which would eventually all come to be housed at the museum. Now, 45 years after his quest began, the collection will be entirely disbanded and sold at auction with all the proceeds going to charity.

One doesn’t have to be a mind reader to know what you’re thinking, what sort of cars could a town of under 40,000 in Northeast Mississippi have? The answer, amazing one. From cars once gifted to friends by Elvis to a 1948 Tucker, of which only about 50 were ever made and regularly fetch over a million at auction. From 1886 with a Benz to 1994 with a Dodge Viper the museum houses over 175 vehicles representing each decade in between, displayed in chronological order. A full list can be seen here.

The cars will find their new forever homes in late April, 25-27, with Bonhams Auctioneers taking point.

Audi Jumps on ‘New Santa’ Bandwagon This Christmas Season

It looks like automotive manufacturers have had it with fat Santas in old sleighs. Joining Dodge this year on the buff Santa bandwagon is Audi with their latest spot, “New Santa.”

The four minute spot takes you through Kris Kringle’s year long transformation with the usual running, boxing and eating right montages you’ve come to expect in any movie makeover. However, the confusing part is why Santa wants to lose weight in the first place. On the Christmas Eve that prompted his change he sees a couple returning home in a new Audi RS 5 Sportback which obviously makes him love the car, but as to why he feels he needs an image change to get it is beyond me and seems counter to selling actual cars.

In the end he is rewarded with his new car sleigh and New Santa is officially debuted on Christmas Eve.

SEMA Built Mustang, Lamborghini Creation Headed To Barrett

This will certainly be one of the most unique cars crossing the Barrett-Jackson stage next month, a 2009 Ford Lamborghini Tractorri Custom Coupe. Remember those? Yes? You’re a liar. This car was a one-off SEMA build with a name as convoluted as the car.

Don’t get me wrong. I love custom cars, but I generally like when they come with a reason as to why you did it? This creation is impressive as it features, “the entire running gear from a brand-new Lamborghini Gallardo underneath.” That’s right, a Lamborghini in a 2007 Mustang’s clothing. This is issue one for me in that they swapped the wrong parts. In no universe is the United States going to top Italy on design, they should have gone the route of the Pantera combining American power and Italian design.

The other glaring issue is the build cost with over $700,000 invested. I understand as a SEMA build that a good amount of that was most likely from sponsors, but still? There is no way to recoup that value short of maybe, and that’s a big maybe, stripping the car. Which doesn’t seem like a terrible idea with the Gallardo V10 it’s packing.

Shockingly the one aspect that works for me is the interior and how subdued it is verse the rest of the car. However, certainly not the interior that a person with the bank account to buy a Gallardo would be interested in. In all, the car is a testament to what builders can achieve as they continue to push the envelope, but in doing so they need to stop and ask themselves the question why. Or as Chris Rock once said about doing something just because you can, “you can drive a car with your feet if you want to, that don’t make it a good f*cking idea!”

80th Anniversary Lincoln Continental Resurrects ‘Suicide Doors’

Celebrating 80 years of the Lincoln Continental the manufacturer decided to throw it back in a major way with the anniversary edition featuring the iconic “center-opening doors” aka suicide doors.

In recent years some aftermarket doors of this style have made it pretty tacky, but when done right, or on older models, the look is brilliant. In this instance I think Lincoln teeters on that brilliance, but the car could stand to be longer in the rear as the current affect with the doors open is a somewhat stubby appearance. Nevertheless, we welcome the return of such an iconic look.

The Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition, if only the rear were as long as it’s name, will be limited to just 80 units. Though the run maybe one unit for every year buyers will need not look beyond 2019 when the run is expected to take place, but wait, if you’re not keen on titles you can wait for the 2020 model which will be simply the Continental Coach Door Edition.

With a 2+2 setup the sedan features best in class legroom and has back seats reminiscent of luxury no longer seen in many American cars. Under the hood it features a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine featuring 400hp and matching amount of torque as well as three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Comfort… But leaves those to your driver.

Orders are being accepted now and delivery is slated for summer of 2019.

Ken Block, The Hoonigans Drop Gymkhana 10

The TV series about making a YouTube series, The Gymkhana Files, concluded where it all began with the debut of a YouTube video, Gymkhana 10.

Though this raises the question of whether or not Gymkhana 10 is actually a YouTube video if it first debuted on Amazon Prime? After all, numerous clips from TV make their way to YouTube, but not YouTube videos in the way the term is used. One can’t help, but think this is all by design as The Hoonigans continue to play with all forms of media from regular series airing on YouTube to their Amazon show and even some Twitch streams in-between.

The latest, and possibly last as it will be hard to ever top, Gymkhana film incorporates multiple cars from the franchise and multiple locations as it celebrates its tin anniversary. Enough words, you’ve waited long enough for this. Checkout Gymkhana 10 in all its globetrotting glory below!

Two Ferrari LaFerraris Headed To Same Auction

For the first weekend in January you might as well refer to Kissimmee, FL as La La Land because TWO Ferrari LaFerraris will be crossing the block.

The older of the two supercars is a 2014 with just 418 miles and a Kia Stingers worth of options. Seriously, it has $37,589 worth of special features added to the car. Only 499 LaFerraris were manufactured between 2013 and 2016 which means these two represent .4% of all the ones produced. Less exciting put that way, but a rare opportunity to see two together, let alone potentially own one.

The second of the two is a 2016 LaFerrari Aperta with 174 miles and one of only 210 produced. This limited version of the LaFerrari commemorates the 70th Anniversary of Ferrari. While the other may have a Stingers worth of options this car nearly doubles it with a pretty astounding $62,807 worth, including the black carbon fiber roof.

A factory top speed of 217mph both these LaFerraris stand to sell equally as fast to two, or one very deep pocketed, collectors.

Mad Dash For Cash Following Armored Car Crash

This footage of an accident involving an armored truck in New Jersey raised a lot of questions for me. Sure, some major accident could send cash flying, but from the looks of this it was a fender bender for the truck; however, not so much for the car that rear-ended. So how does this happen?

In the movies you occasionally see pallets of cash traveling wrapped in plastic, but that’s the movies and more times than not in Hollywood it’s still being transported via locked canvas type bags. It’s also this style of bag that you usually see in person, you know, waiting in the McDonald’s line when the truck shows to pick up the cash. So how does a rear-ending spring the doors, open the bags and send cash flying?

Cash is in the wind, traffic is at a stand still, what do you do? In the movies, if you haven’t picked up that’s my major source of learning, people always rush to pocket flying cash and in this case life certainly imitated art. What would you do? This isn’t a dollar on the street, it’s clear where the money came from and who it belongs to, but I think a lot of us seem to think that because it’s in bulk it’s fair game… These folks in New Jersey did. So do you line your pockets?

Following the event the local police issued a tweet saying basically return the money and all will be forgiven. This clearly means some kinda crime was committed by those who took it so do you trust them and return it?

I’ve given it a lot of thought and in this instance I would return some. Enough to appease the police who most likely have me on camera thanks to all the snitches taping, but not all. In an instance where cameras aren’t present and I can grab money out of the air… bring on the steak and lobster.

Ford Performance Welcomes The Mustang To NASCAR By Drifting The Roval

The era of the Ford Mustang in the Monster Energy Cup Series is officially upon us as Ford Performance, MECS champion Joey Logano and Formula DRIFT champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. welcomed the NASCAR Mustang to the family.

Joey behind the wheel of the 2019 NASCAR Mustang GT and Vaughn piloting his Mustang RTR Spec 5-D at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the duo clearly had some fun going fast on the oval and drifting the road course or rather, some fun on the roval. The tandem were later joined by Vaughn’s Mustang RTR teammate Chelsea DeNofa in the all-new Mustang GT for some celebratory donuts.

Ford Performance perhaps said it best across the Jumbotron in the video, “Mustang likes to party!” And that is clearly evident in the video below.

BMW Motorrad Displays Boxer Engine Prototype In Custom Motorcycle

The following statement could ruffle some feathers, but… Japanese customizers do the best car work in the world. This doesn’t mean others are bad, but having visited numerous custom shops there and attended custom shows it has become a truth to me. That being said, CUSTOM WORKS ZON of Japan appears to also be a world class motorcycle customizer.

Commissioned by BMW Motorad the bike debuted a couple weeks back at the Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan. It was built by the shop’s founders Yuichi Yoshizawa and Yoshikazu Ueda as a way of highlighting BMW Motorad’s prototype boxer engine and by the look of things, they succeeded. Details about the engine are being held back and relayed in such a way that BMW almost seemed surprised by it in their press release:

There was a lot of speculation at the show about the prototype engine. The external geometry and visible elements such as the push rods running above the cylinders in chrome-plated protection ducts recall BMW Motorrad boxer engines that were built until the late 1960s – but with an evidently larger capacity and a modern air/oil cooling.

That’s your engine! Why are you staring at it like the rest of us at a car show!? No matter what’s actually going on with the engine the bike took home the “Best of Show Motorcycle” award, for obvious reasons.

‘Garage Rehab’ Gets Release Date, First Look

“Spread the word around, guess who’s back in town!” Richard, Russell and Chris are back for an all-new season of Garage Rehab beginning Tuesday, January 8th at 8pm EST.

The trio of Gas Monkey’s Richard Rawlings, Russell “The Muscle” Holmes and Chris “The Hustle” Stephens make their return with a two hour premiere of garage rehabbing action. This season the crew will take on some of their biggest challenges yet, in square footage and in sentiment, as they rehab a 20,000 sq.-ft. garage and one owned by a veteran who helps educate other veterans re-assimilating to civilian life.

Garage Rehab will air Tuesdays at 8pm following the January 8th premiere.

Aston Martin’s Valkyrie Engine Is Pure Insanity

In the never ending quest manufacturers are on for more power, Aston Martin has unveiled their new Valkyrie engine pushing the envelope for hypercars everywhere.

Aston set out with a simple sounding, yet incredibly difficult goal, “to create the ultimate expression of the internal combustion engine.” Never has it been more appropriate to say, “mission accomplished.” The British manufacturer debuted their new 1,014hp at 10,500rpm naturally aspirated engine capable of revving has high as 11,000rpm and peak torque for the engine is 546lb.-ft at 7,000rpm. These numbers are representative of raw internal combustion power, but stand to be improved on.

By who?! You maybe wondering. Aston Martin themselves, of course. The Valkyrie’s power will get an added boost from a battery hybrid system which the company will release final numbers on at a later date. Until that date comes I suppose we will just have to settle for this 1,014hp naturally aspirated V12… Oh well.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Back Behind The Wheel At 2019 Daytona 500

It’s been just over a year since NASCAR’s most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. hung up is race suit in favor of a suit suit, but it would appear he’s making a comeback… Of sorts.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner will be back at one of his best tracks having racked up four wins, 13 top 5s and 19 top 10s in 36 NASCAR Cup Series races at the super speedway. However, this time he will be leading the field to green behind the wheel of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado. The 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque Silverado with its 6.2L V8 engine will be the first truck to ever pace The Great American Race in its 61 year history.

All eyes will again be on Dale Jr. Sunday, February 17th as the green flag drops on the the 2019 Monster Energy Cup Series.

Ferrari 290 MM Joins Top 10 Most Expensive Cars Sold At Auction

RM Sotheby’s wrapped up their 2018 auction season at the renowned Petersen Automotive Museum this past weekend in Los Angeles, CA. In all the single day auction saw $39.8 million in total sales with an astounding $22,005,000 of that coming from the sale of this rare 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti.

As an official Scuderia Ferrari Works car for two years, 1956 and 1957, this 290 MM saw a relative who’s who of drivers behind the wheel piloting it to a number of wins. Most notably is the Ferrari’s win at the Nassau Trophy and Memorial race with Stirling Moss driving and its podium finishes at Mille Miglia and 1000 KM of Buenos Aires.

Today only three examples of the 290 MM remain in existence and this is the top. Having undergone restoration by Ferrari Classiche it was fully restored and wears the livery of its 1957 12 Hours of Sebring outing. Chassis No. 0628 it features, “matching-numbers engine, gearbox, and original body” which undoubtedly is part of what sparked a bidding war between three phone buyers before ultimately being hammered at $22,005,000. This mind-blowing sum, which apparently three people had just laying around, puts the 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti in the top 10 of most expensive cars ever sold at auction.

For Sale | Seiko Camaro’s Stock Wheels, Tires, Hood, more!

More times than not the cars we build don’t begin as much, but in this rare instance we began with a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro SS for our Seiko watch build.

By now I’m sure you saw the finished result and if you haven’t I’m seriously concerned how you missed the above image, but the reveal itself was one of our largest to date. Richard and seven-time NASCAR Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson took to the heart of midtown Manhattan to uncover the car for the world. Under that cover was a car which only vaguely resembled the stock Camaro it began as, which not only means you got to see a sick build, but can now snag all the original unused parts for cheap.

Factory Original Take Off 20″ Wheels & Tires, Hood, Front Grills (upper & lower) and Rear Spoiler and Complete Leather Seat Covers from a 2018 Camaro SS.

These items were removed from a brand new car we built here at the shop with only 6 miles on the odometer!
The tires are Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 Run Flats, 245/40 ZR20 in the front & 275/35 ZR20 for the rear mounted on the factory Aluminum 5 spoke rims, again with only 6 miles on them as shown.

The seat covers are also brand new having been removed for this project, they are black leather and complete with SS emblems attached.

The hood and front grills are the Factory Composite SS pieces to replace your stock SS hood and grills or upgrade your non SS vehicle. Rear spoiler is from the same 2018 SS Camaro. 51 Year-Old Single Owner Volkswagen Beetle Restored Better Than New

The word Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German and that consumer first mentality was on display for Kathleen Brooks whose 1967 Beetle got a full-restoration by the manufacturer.

Before you go bombarding Volkswagen with requests to restore your Beetle ask yourself this, “did you buy it new in 1966 and drive it daily to this day?” If the answer is no, then you’re no Kathleen. That’s right, the now 73-year-old purchased her Beetle “Annie” in Riverside, CA while in her early 20s and drove it daily ever since. However, for the last 11 months she had been without her beloved Annie as Volkswagen whisked her away to their Puebla, Mexico, factory for some needed restoration.

Given the cars advanced age the team in Mexico had to deal with the expected issue like rust, dents and faded paint, but also gave the car some upgrades like AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo, disc brakes and even custom seats with “Kathleen” and “Annie” embroidered. In all, the team replaced 40% of the car and restored 357 original pieces. They went so far as to color match the correct paint from an unfaded patch in the glove box and even reproduce the stickers that Kathleen had collected on the car through the years.

Now fitting of a museum or auction you wont see this Beetle at either. If you want to catch a glimpse of this ’67 you better head out west and hope to catch it cruising the California coast, you’ll know it by the driver smiling ear to ear.
