2019 Silverado Delivers More Power For Less Money

That’s right! For 2019 the Chevrolet Silverado LT will have a 2.7L Turbo engine producing 22% more torque than the outgoing 4.3L V6.

What does that equal in terms of cost? 700 big ones less, well, they’re probably regular sized dollars, but savings is savings. That figure is a maximum according to Chevy and based off the starting MSRP.

Power is not the only thing you’re getting more of for your dollar with the 2019, but it’s also being billed as, “larger, more capable, more fuel efficient.” Another big get for those looking for the factory upgrade is the Z71 package is now available across all models and includes the following features.

-Off-road tuned Rancho twin-tube shocks.
-Electronic hill descent control.
-Two-speed transfer case and automatic locking rear differential.
-Skid plates for engine oil pan and transfer-case protection.
-Heavy-duty air filter.
-18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires.
-Dual exhaust outlets for models equipped with V-8 engines.
-Advanced, active-safety features, including: Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert*.
-Front and Rear Park Assist*.
-Rear Cross Traffic Alert*.
-Forward Collision Alert* and Following Distance Indicator*.
-Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking*.
-Front Pedestrian Braking*.
-Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning*.
-Safety Alert Seat*.
-IntelliBeam headlamps, high-beam assist.
-Advanced technology features, including: GM-exclusive, 3 x 7-inch configurable color head-up display.

High Dollar, High Horsepower Cars Head West On goldRush

The goldRush Rally continued its journey west from Boston to Las Vegas with a stop in Dallas yesterday, the first stop of the annual journey’s second leg.

In Gas Monkey’s backyard we of course had to go and check it out and if you’re a fan of our live cam you may have noticed Kurt Busch’s Ford GT checking us out as well. If you didn’t have a chance to see the rally revelers and their cars yesterday at American Airlines Center don’t fret, we captured some of the best high-end, exotic and wild cars on the rally in the gallery below. And if you feel like catching them in person they depart the Lone Star State today with stops in Albuquerque and Scottsdale before wrapping up July 1st in Las Vegas.

Is This The Next Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat [Update: Yes!]

Dodge currently is hosting this video unlisted on their YouTube page with no information about it on their media site so, frankly, your guess is a good as ours.

The title of the video, “RED797_62818 | Challenger | Dodge,” seems a bit to us like a place holder. The “RED797” portion being the video name and “62818” being today’s date, an indicator to the their team the date it’s to be made public, perhaps? There is also speculation that the 797 refers to horsepower which would be a 90hp increase putting this Challenger at near Demon numbers.

We will update as needed with any new developments, but until then enjoy this teaser…Whatever it might be.

UPDATE

News has dropped and the RED797 does in fact refer to the new Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, a 797hp beast and it’s not alone, joining the, “powerful SRT Hellcat lineup ever.”

With the new horsepower and 707lb.-ft. of torque comes a new top speed time of 203mph and title of “fastest grand touring (GT) production car with a ¼-mile elapsed time (E.T.) of 10.8 seconds at 131 mph.” The Redeye joins the normal Hellcat (as if 700+ hp is normal) which saw a 10hp increase bringing its new total to 717hp and 655lb.-ft. of torque.

Additionally Dodge will be putting out widebody versions of both expanding the SRT Hellcat lineup to four models. You can checkout the press release from Dodge in its entirety here.

Twin-Turbo Lamborghini Huracan Breaks Own Record At 259.67mph

Underground Racing does racing incredibly well and thankfully for us, the underground part incredibly poorly; since here they are breaking their own half mile record with a 259.67mph run.

The record half mile bested their previous run in the twin-turbo Lambo Huracan by over two seconds having previously run the half in 256.99. It takes the guys a few runs to build up to the record run, even at one point tying their prior record, so the whole video is worth a watch… or at least the sections where a yellow blur crosses your screen quickly.

Volkswagen Shatters Pikes Peak Records

Volkswagen set out to set records at Pikes Peak and it’s no surprise they did, but by just how much is mind blowing.

With Romain Dumas being the wheel of the purpose built 680hp, twin-engine prototype he was able to climb to the clouds in 7m 57.148s. In doing so he, and Volkswagen, broke the all-time record by 16 seconds and broke the electric vehicle record.

Though a purpose built racer the I.D. R represents the range of Volkswagen’s electric cars to come in the next few years. And given the I.D. R was built in just 8 months we should all be optimistic about the manufacturer’s electric future.

Final Production Demon, Viper To Be Auctioned As Pair

One thousand four hundred and eighty five horsepower will cross the block together at Barrett-Jackson Northeast this weekend. The pair will represent the last 2017 Dodge Viper built and the final of the limited-production 2018 Dodge Demon run. Further sweetening the deal is the fact that one-hundred percent of the hammer price will go to benefit United Way.

The Demon brings with it 840hp and the title of the first, and only, purpose built production drag car while the Viper carries more production car track records in its 25 year run than any other production car in history. Thanks largely in part to the “8.4L V-10 engine, aerospace-grade, lightweight carbon fiber body, iconic side exhaust and massive 14-inch wide rear tires.”

The lot will be sold at the company’s Connecticut auction where they stand to bring big money. Back in 2014 Hellcat 001 was sold for charity for $1.65 million, a number which this duo stands to certainly pass.

This duo will be auctioned off Saturday, June 23 at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction in Connecticut at 3:00 PM EST. You can watch live on Discovery and streaming live on Barrett-Jackson website.

Kurt Busch To Unleash Ford GT On goldRush Rally

It’s no Pantera, but then again we may have a bias when it comes to what Ford powered car he should be driving in the annual goldRush Rally. However, credit where credit is due, Kurt’s Ford GT looks pretty sick in its rally wrap.

The annual rally will kickoff tomorrow in Boston making it’s way south to New York, but not before a stop at Barrett-Jackson’s northeast auction. From there it’s: Pittsburgh, Detroit and St. Louis to wrap up the first leg. The second leg will begin in Memphis and head to our hometown of Dallas before its final few stops: Albuquerque, Scottsdale and ultimately Kurt’s hometown of Las Vegas.

With races at Sonoma and Chicagoland bookmarking the rally its hard to say which, if any, of the route Kurt will be driving himself, but nevertheless excited to see GT owners willing to drive them.

AM General Debuts Next-Gen NXT 360 Tactical Vehicle

AM General took to Eurosatory 2018, an international expo on security and defense, to showcase the next generation of tactical vehicle technology. The looks of the new NXT 360 is all Humvee which is a good thing, because as the expression goes, “dance with the one that brought you,” and since Desert Storm that’s been the Humvee.

“The NXT 360 provides added protection, payload capacity, and superior handling performance to perform in any rugged or urban environment,” said Andy Hove, AM General President and CEO.

A further benefit to the NXT 360 is that it can be acquired as an entirely new unit or as an upgrade to existing fleets. The latter, undoubtedly, will help keep military spending down. Maybe that Space Force is closer than we think.

Jimny Cricket! Suzuki Releases Images Of Revamped SUV

Guys! Suzuki did a thing, and they did it real well, they upgraded the Jimny!

It has been 20 years since the SUV last received a facelift and in a day and age where car companies can become too forward looking in styling and performance it looks like Suzuki nailed it. While it certainly looks to new, and future, generations of Jimnys the styling is also reminiscent of classic SUVs, like Mercedes’ G-Wagen or Land Rover’s Defender.

Little more is known than what is revealed in the photos which, truthfully, were probably released early following a string of spy shots showing the Jimny unmasked. So with that we will have to wait longer for the technical aspects but from the exterior and chassis photos things are looking good for Suzuki.

Cannonball Run Reboot In The Works

As the old quote goes, “everything that can be invented, has been invented” and it looks like we’re getting more evidence to that as Warner Bros is in talks to reboot the Cannonball Run franchise, per Deadline.

Having acquired the sequel and remake rights from the original copyright owners, Brock Yates among them, Warner Bros is in with talks with two of Reno 911‘s finest, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, to pen the script. In addition to being widely know for their roles as Jim Dangle and Travis Junior, respectively, the duo has written for the show as well as a number of feature films. Dodgeball director Rawson Thurber is said to be taking on directing duties.

Rebooting such a famed franchise will undoubtedly be met with mixed emotions as no one can match Burt Reynolds on the big screen, but then again it will certainly be fun seeing new life breathed into some of our favorite Cannonball characters.

Watch The 2019 Corvette ZR1 Hit 215mph On The Track

When it debuted late last year it was no secret that the 2019 Corvette ZR1 could perform and perform exceptionally. Since then we have been graced with all sorts of tales of its performance and dyno videos, but now Chevy has released their own video of it completing a top track speed run.

On the run it hit a top speed of 214.88mph with an average time of 212mph reaffirming it as the fastest production Corvette in history.

This DB5 Is Most Expensive Piece Of James Bond Memorabilia

It’s not particularly surprising that a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Sports Saloon driven by James Bond is valuable, but what is surprising that out of all the Bonds it was driven by Pierce Brosnan.

Used in the opening sequence of GoldenEye this British icon was pitted against a Ferrari F355 driven by Famke Janssen through the streets of Monaco. The DB5 is no stranger to the Bond movie franchise having first appeared in Goldfinger in the mid-60s in place of the DB Mark III which would grace the pages of the novel.

This particular DB5 holds the “Guinness Book of World Records” for most valuable piece of Bond memorabilia setting the record when it was sold to its current owner in 2001. It will again seek a record setting price when it heads to auction at The Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale where it’s currently projected as high as $2.1 million.

Mecum Denver wrapped up this past weekend with no car later than 1970 cracking the top 5 in sales and only one non-American car in the top 5. The sole European car was a 1966 Volkswagen 21-Window Samba Bus which went for nearly $120,000 continuing the classic’s run as a hot auction commodity. Women in Engineering Award Recipients

Every year, General Motors honors women who are outstanding in the field of engineering and have made pathways for other women through their work in EcoCAR. Countless Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) women have demonstrated outstanding technical excellence and a commitment to enable more women to study engineering and pursue careers in the automotive industry through the EcoCAR.

At this year’s competition, the General Motors Women in Engineering Rookie Award was given to Kerri Lloyd from the Ohio State University EcoCAR 3 team. Jessica Britt from the Georgia Tech team was awarded the 2018 General Motors Women in Engineering Award.

The Rookie Award recognizes an outstanding female EcoCAR Team member who is already contributing to the team, yet has the potential to do even more.  Kerri just completed her second full year on the team, and as a junior she was selected to be the Electrical Team Lead, a position often given to graduate students.  With a strong personal automotive background, she dove into her leadership role with confidence and led the integration of multiple new low and high voltage systems into her team’s vehicle.  She also demonstrated her commitment to encouraging women to pursue engineering. In an effort to encourage more women, she created an EcoCAR Women of Excellence award that she presented at the school’s Women in Engineering Banquet on behalf of her team.

Jessica Britt, reciepient of the General Motors Women in Engineering Award, impressed the judges with her professional quality presentations, and with the passion that she exudes for EcoCAR. In her 4 years on the EcoCAR team, she has held roles in Project Management, Controls & SMS, Electrical, System Safety, and Communication. She took on these assignments as personal growth opportunities and because with each she saw an opportunity to help take her team to the next level, both technically and with female engagement.

As the System Safety Manager and part of the Controls & SMS Team, Jessica led the development, documentation, and testing of componentized safety checks for 132 operational and safety requirements with 401 individual use cases within her team’s Camaro’s supervisory controller.

Jessica demonstrated equal dedication to engaging women in engineering for her team by revamping the team recruiting process when she noted a drop-off in female team members between Years 2 and 3.  By using targeted mailing lists and Facebook posts sent by women team members, the team was able to increase the visibility of the existing women on the team and make themselves more attractive to new recruits. 

In parallel, by creating a friendly atmosphere in the team’s shop for both women and men who were shy about asking how they could get involved, she was able to encourage multiple team members to reach outside their comfort zones to be stronger contributors to the team. As a result of these efforts, the team was able to double their female participation in Year 4 as well as grow the percent of women in leadership positions from 25% in Year 2, to 46% in Year 4.

The judges heard from a dozen strong candidates this year for the title, and the accomplishments each of these women shared demonstrated their highly developed technical skills, commitment to encouraging other women to pursue and succeed in engineering, and overall excitement for EcoCAR.

We congratulate Kerri Lloyd, Jessica Britt, and all the men and women of EcoCAR who make the fields of science and engineering more welcome to everyone.
