Owner Of 24 Years To Part With Storied 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV

The story of Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari is one of racing’s all-time greats, but one for another time; however, from that rivalry a plethora of stories were spawned and that of the 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV is a doozy.

In 1966 Ford would officially give the middle finger to Ferrari with their first 24 Hour Le Mans win, but it was the next year in the 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV that the manufacturer would take the checkered on the first, and only, all-American Le Mans win. It’s easy to be confused, there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to Le Mans, and while the 1966 win was the first for the American manufacturer, the drivers were from New Zealand and the GT 40’s chassis from the U.K. That all changed when Ford built the 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV in the good ole U.S. of A and Shelby-American would field a team of American racers, Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt. In command of a secondary car for Ford the duo was not the team anyone anticipated bringing home the victory for Ford, but in the end it was them who would stand atop the podium and secure a spot in history as the only all-American team (manufacturer, team and driver) to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Twelve 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IVs were built and this one represents the 12th and final of them. It has been owned by the same owner for 24 years who is currently set to part ways with it at Gooding and Company’s Amelia Island auction. The storied racecar will include a spare chassis and is predicted to sell for anywhere from $2-2.5 million.
