The adage goes “age before beauty,” but this past weekend at Mecum Las Vegas you saw age AND beauty fetch top dollar. In all the top 4 cars sold had an average age of just under 80-years-old and sold for an average price of $571,313.
Stealing the show was the only car to break the million dollar mark, a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Faux Cabriolet. In fact, the $1,012,000 it fetched was nearly a quarter-million more than the second place 1930 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton which brought in $770,000. From there the drop off was even more substantial, but thanks to the high bar set we were still seeing a pretty penny change hands.
A 1934 Packard 1104 Super 8 Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton gaveled just over the quarter-million mark at $258,500 while just below it a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300D Cabriolet took in $244,750. Rounding out the top five, for good measure, was a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda which sold for $220,000. If you’re heading off to an elderly relative or friend’s house this Thanksgiving maybe sneak a peak in their garage because there is no telling what past treasure might be revealed.
