This isn’t the first time you’ll have seen the 1970 Plymouth Superbird on Gas Monkey Garage, nor will it be the last, and for one reason, they’re super cool. Sure, the spoiler maybe a bit divisive, but this car was never really built for those people, or any average Joe, they were built to race.
Per NASCAR rules that the cars being raced also be made available to the public, Plymouth was forced to make enough Superbirds to meet the two per dealer requirement. Final numbers for the car vary, but this one headed to auction is said to be just one of 308 produced as optioned and one of just under 2000 ever produced. The reason this 1970 is one of just 308 is simple yet surprising, the engine.
Essentially being produced to the public to appease NASCAR Plymouth still offered the limited-run car with three engine options and two transmission. This Superbird headed to auction in Houston rests squarely in the middle with the 440 Super Commando Six Barrel producing 390hp. On the high side was the 426 Hemi V8 with 425hp and on the low the 375hp Super Commando, granted the Hemi option remained the less popular of the time due to the higher cost.
Headed to auction in early April this Plymouth is said to have 66,000 actual miles and features its original A833 4-speed transmission, 3.54 Dana rear end and fender tag. And speaking of tags, the price tag for this car has only increased through the years with Hagerty valuing a fair condition at $183,000 and a Concours at $389,000.
