Rare Alfa Romeo Montreal, A Hidden Gem Stateside

In 1967 Montreal, Quebec, Canada would host Expo 67, a World’s Fair which would be one of the most successful of the century. As a result, Montreal would pay homage to the Expo the following year by naming their major league baseball team, the Expos (now the Nationals). However, another name would also arise from Expo 67 in Montreal, the Alfa Romeo Montreal.

That year at Expo 67 Alfa Romeo would debut a 2+2 coupe concept with no name, but before long attendees would dub it “The Montreal.” Three years later Alfa Romeo would bring the first production version of their Expo 67 concept to the Geneva Motor Show; it was called, Montreal. While its namesake would carryover from Canada the production Montreal would change significantly. It was now backed by a 2.6L V8 with a ZF five-speed transmission producing 197hp and redlining at 7,000 rpm, a vast upgrade from the 1.6L concept. The design was the work of Marcello Gandini who would also design the Lamborghini Countach and Diablo, among others, as well as numerous Maseratis and other makes. This would all come at a fairly significant price for the Italian sports car, nearly $60,000 in today’s market.

The Montreal would remain in production until 1977, but during that run Alfa Romeo would struggle to move the small number they were producing. A number that was only averaging a little north of 500 per year, bringing the total run to about 3900. And somewhat ironically the Montreal would never officially return to Montreal, or anywhere in North America for that matter, as a version was never developed to meet emissions standards for the region. As a result of its low production numbers and rareness in the states (only 70 are believed to exist in the US) the Montreal is a rare and unique find for any collector, especially those who embrace Italian car heritage.

Vintage Racers Galore At Indy’s Historic Gasoline Alley

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is as much about tradition as it is about racing, from the singing of “(Back Home Again in) Indiana” to the milk in Victory Lane. Another great tradition is Gasoline Alley which hosts a number of historic race cars on race weekend before they’re used in the pre-race festivities prior to the Indy 500. A walk through Gasoline Alley is a walk through history and you never know who may just be hanging around *cough* Ray Evernham *cough*.

Ernest “Bud” Cox To Have Legendary Motorcycle Collection Auctioned

The past decade or so has created a landscape for auto auctions which is unlikely to be replicated anytime in the near or distant future. You see, as a point of reference, if a solider returning from WWII was 21-years-old in 1945 that would make them 93 today. That soldier would come home to a victorious and prosperous America which in turn meant there were opportunities abound. Opportunities which were exacerbated by the fact that many were also returning with a skillset learned in the military. Combined, this created a perfect storm, so to speak, for success.

How does this impact car auctions over 50 years removed? Well, unfortunately, this post-war “greatest generation” can’t live forever. Meaning, the car or motorcycle collection amassed by that young soldier after WWII would most likely be sold at the time of their passing. Now let’s give that soldier a name, Earnest “Bud” Cox. Bud was a mechanic in WWII working on flame-thrower tanks, he was 21 when the war ended in 1945 and just seven years later he would start an aviation supply machine shop in his garage. His business would rapidly grow and by 47-year-old Bud would sell his stake in the company to his son; however, not the idle type Bud would again start a business with another son for a couple more years before retiring for good in 1972 to pursue his true passion, motorcycles.

RELATED: Automotive Legend, Gene Winfield, Visits GMG

A master mechanic Bud would become regarded as an expert in motorcycles and restore around 40 through his career. He would also build himself a mighty collection which according to Mecum Auctions would include, “no fewer than 14 Indians, ranging between a 1906 single-cylinder racer, a 1931 4-cylinder, several World War II military models of 30.50 CI and 45 CI, a Resto Mod 1936 Indian Scout with a telescopic fork and disc brake, and of course the fantastic Indian ‘Super 6.’ He also owned 12 Harley-Davidsons between 1914 and 2001, plus individual models of Reading-Standard, Pope, Excelsior, Honda and Whizzer.” Sadly, Bud would pass away in 2016 at 92. His extensive collection will all be auctioned off in Las Vegas June 1-3. While it is exciting that Bud’s collection will be available to be seen, and enjoyed by numerous new owners at the end of the weekend, it is another example of the changing auction scene.

Silver State Classic Brings Crazy Speeds To Public Road, 200+ NASCAR Car [Video]

Imagine a land with legalized gambling, prostitution and twice a year a 90-mile stretch of highway closed so that people can go fast. Well, stop imagining and get yourself to Nevada, but in September because you just missed May’s Nevada Open Road Challenge. Established in 1988 by Silver State Classic Challenge, Inc, with the help of law enforcement, they open up a 90-mile stretch of Route 318 to more than 200 drivers who want to grab their favorite car and let it rip. These year provided an interesting entry when a 2006 Dodge NASCAR car entered the mix and was clocked going well over 200 miles an hour. Nevada, keep being awesome!

Live Like The King, Elvis Presley’s Private Jet For Sale

Nearly as much for his music Elvis has become known for his glitzy lifestyle: lavish jumpsuits, flashy cars and custom airplanes. An example of the latter can now be yours at no reserve. The King’s 1962 Lockheed Jetstar jet is currently being offered through GWS Auctions and is the only remaining plane, of three, once owned by Elvis that is privately owned. His other planes are owned by The Elvis Presley Museum and this one is primed for a museum of its own with an interior that Elvis himself helped design. Red velvet dominates the planes interior with gold-tone hardware and woodwork all to the King’s specifications. The plane would make a great addition to a personal collection or an attraction of its own, but don’t look to fly it as the engines have been removed and the cockpit not updated.

The Winner of the Year Three Competition is…

It has been a thrilling year for the EcoCAR 3 competition and it was Ohio State University who took home first place title. The Year Three competition included a week of rigorous safety, technical, drive quality and emissions testing of the team Camaros at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. Teams also had several days of presentations to show judges how they have developed as the next generation of engineers and business leaders who will be better prepared for the auto industry and related careers. Presentations took place in Washington, D.C., with students judged by industry and government officials.

EcoCAR 3 teams have arrived in Milford, MI at the GM Milford Proving Grounds (MPG) and will undergo various safety and technical inspections to qualify for on road vehicle testing. Teams will be evaluated on their vehicle’s dynamic safety, handling, and energy consumption in various events. The Ohio State University team showed all-around excellence in Year Three. The team excelled with the components they chose and the unique ways they have integrated them into their vehicle. Impressively, the students produced a reliable, well-designed drive-line to incorporate a P3 motor using a stock component.

“Ohio State fully integrated their vehicle with impressive attention to details, and they managed to maintain the legacy of the Camaro while moving it into the future,” said Kristen Wahl, director of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition at Argonne National Laboratory. “Innovative thinking and tireless devotion clearly contributed to the team’s success.”

In addition, the Ohio State team tackled the difficult task of using an automated manual transmission, which has allowed the team to have increased control over their transmission, resulting in an even more efficient vehicle. Overall, the year was a huge success for all aspects of the team.

We would also like to congratulate the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Georgia Tech teams for coming in second and third place, respectively.

It’s been a great year of EcoCAR 3 and we look forward to seeing all of the incredible work each team will bring to Year Four!

One Of Only 51 ’69 Ferrari Dino 206 GTs By Scaglietti Up For Auction

Forgotten through the years to those who aren’t serious collectors or Ferrari fanatics this 1969 Dino 206 GT by Scaglietti is a gem. Produced by Ferrari, but sold under the Dino moniker, the 206 GT was oft overshadowed by the Ferrari banner. Combined with the small run of 206’s, just 152 in total and 51 in 1969, the car has become increasingly rare and valued by collectors. Given the low numbers, the 206 GTs remained very much hand built compared to their 246 GT/GTS counterparts who had a significantly more mechanized building process resulting in nearly 3,800 being produced.

RELATED: Super Rare ’93 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 At Auction

The 206 GT was powered by a 2-liter all-alloy V6 engine which at the time played against its popularity when Ferrari’s were being regularly produced with more desirable V12 engines. However, through the years the market began to take notice of the Dino 206 GT and even secured itself a spot on Motor Trends list of “The Greatest Ferraris of All Time.” This weekend presents an opportunity for collectors to own their own 1969 Dino 206 GT by Scaglietti when it crosses the auction block at Villa Erba in Italy this weekend.

WhistlePig Named One Of World’s Best Whiskeys

The name Boss Hog carries with it certain connotations, but in the case of WhistlePig Boss Hog: Black Prince Rye Whiskey toss out everything you’re thinking. A southern whiskey? Nope. Vermont. A hodgepodge operation that involves a bathtub? Nah, rather, homegrown fields of rye, water from the nearby well and barrels from the oak trees on the premises. The result, the newly crowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition winner of “Best in Show” for Whiskey. WhistlePig Boss Hog: Black Prince Rye Whiskey will set you back around $500, if you can get your hands on the very rare rye whiskey which is being produced in just a 30 barrel run.
