It’s easy to Monday morning quarterback events, but in saying IMSA was correct in their decision to move the Advance Auto Parts Sportscar Showdown from August to May resulted in phenomenal weather. The Gas Monkey Energy-BAR1 Motorsports ORECA FLM09 had some early morning changes done before taking the green flag at Circuit of the Americas in an effort to stiffen up the car. Unfortunately, the car remained loose well into the afternoon as the downside of the beautiful day, the sun, wreaked havoc.
Overheating of the brakes was not a new challenge as it was an issue last year, but one the team had hoped to have sorted. To add insult to injury, gearbox issues started to rear its head halfway through the race and a decision was made to park the car before any further damage could be done. The team and the car will live to fight another day with their next race coming at the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic in Detroit. Owner/driver Don Yount is optimistic for the Detroit race as he will be reunited with his co-driver, Ryan Lewis, who co-drove the car during their third place finishing run at this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona.
