1) Tail of the Dragon
From the North Carolina/Tennessee border to the intersection of State Highway 115 and US 129 the Tail of the Dragon is short, but sweet. At only 11 miles it features 318 curves of nearly uninterrupted pavement as that stretch of US 129 doesn’t intersect any other major roadways.
2) State Road A1A
From Key West to nearly Georgia A1A runs all along Florida’s East coast beach towns. This section will have you hopping the Florida Keys, but if you’re feeling up for an adventure take on the entire 338 mile route.
3) California State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway)
The first choice for driving the PCH is obviously the entire thing, but it’s a trek and many many segments near Big Sur are now closed due to landslides. However, this section from the Carmel/Pebble Beach area to just across the Golden Gate Bridge is a beauty of its own.
4) Trail Ridge Road
This 48 mile segment on U.S. Highway 34 connects Estes Park and Grand Lake through the beautiful Rocky Mountains and Continental Divide. Only open in summer months be sure to take advantage of the highest continuously paved road in the United States.
5) New York State Route 9A
If feeling adventurous take it all the way from Manhattan’s Battery Park, but to beat the traffic best to meet it just north of the city. From their you can cruise the Hudson through Sleepy Hollow to Blue Mountain Park. Continue even further if you’d like to FDR’s Presidential Library and views of West Point from across the river.
