Here’s the Thing… Like its Type 1 brethren the Volkswagen Type 181 was built for the military and like the Type 1 a civilian variant was introduced. Known in America as the Thing, it carried names such as Trekker, Safari and Pescaccla around the world, but no matter the name its legend lives on today.
A bit a bastard of the Volkswagen brand the Thing was composed of elements from the Beatle, Microbus and Karmann Ghia. The two-wheel drive, four-door drop top convertible would be produced globally for the civilian market for nearly 15 years, but unfortunately just a few years stateside. Like so many cars of the era it would fall victim to stricter safety regulations and seize production for the American market.
However, the car lives on today and remains ever iconic. Models routinely pop up online, like this one, or at auction like the Acapulco Thing that Richard acquired at Barrett-Jackson.
