Hendrick Motorsports has announced who will fill the empty seat in the No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet for 2018 when Dale Earnhardt Jr. retires at the end of this season. The pick is a bit of an obvious yet outside choice by the name of Alex Bowman. Beginning with the latter, Bowman is not a huge name taking over one of the most prestigious numbers in racing, but then again neither was Austin Dillon when he took to the track in the No. 3 for the first time following Sr.’s death.
Bowman is the obvious pick as a test driver for Hendrick he knows the personnel well. Not to mention he filled in for Dale Jr. last season racking up three top 10s and a pole in just 10 starts. Additionally, at just 24, youth is on his side for a team known for cultivating young talent and keeping them around for years and years. Don’t be surprised to hear, “Alex Bowman in the 88,” from the announcers for years to come.
