Ford GT Honors Historic Le Mans Run With Heritage Edition Livery

From 1960 to 1965 Ferrari’s would take the checkered at the historic 24 Hours of Le Mans and then seize to ever again. However, Ferrari’s fate was unknowing sealed years prior in 1963 by founder, Enzo Ferrari. It was 1963 and Ferrari had all but put his name to the contract with Henry Ford II to buyout Ferrari and race in tandem when Enzo pulled out. Furious, Ford set out to hit Ferrari where it would hurt most, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

After two years of failed attempts at Le Mans Ford was able to finally get his revenge in 1966 when a Ford GT40 Mark II would take the Le Mans title, a first for Ford and an American manufacturer. It would also end Ferrari’s reign at Le Mans and be the beginning of Ford’s.

Today, Ford Performance pays tribute to the brands storied history at Le Mans; however, not by honoring the famous 1966 run, but the following year when, arguably, something as famous occurred. With revenge exacted on the Italian automaker and newfound confidence, Ford would return to defend their title at Le Mans. Though this time they would be doing so in a bright red GT40 Mark IV and an all-American team. The Result? Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt would take the win for the second year in a row for Ford. A streak Ford would ride for two more years amassing four straight victories.

This 2018 Ford GT Heritage Edition livery pays tribute to that historic all-American win at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt.
