“Secret Weapon” 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Gets Six Car Run

Not so much a secret anymore, Carroll Shelby’s “Secret Weapon” will return for a six car run. Originally designed for the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans the car only made it as far as a single prototype, but would never race. Now Shelby looks to handle some “unfinished business” by finally producing the all-aluminum, 427 powered, Daytona Coupe race cars.

Fitted with a NASCAR inspired 427 the Daytona was destined to be Shelby’s “Secret Weapon” at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it would never have the chance to race. The truck carrying the Daytona was involved in an accident damaging the car too much to be repaired in time and by the 1965 race the car was back with the 289 engine.
