I can’t speak for everyone, but the future has been a bit of a letdown. No flying cars, no holograms and three sea shells; in fact, the coolest thing in the “future” is the Hyperloop, but that’s just a giant bank tube and the people are the suckers. However, rest assured that we may very well be on the cusp of one of the greatest achievements of the modern era, self-driving pizza deliveries.
Ford and Domino’s have teamed up to begin consumer research into using self-driving cars to deliver pizza. The testing, which will occur in Ann Arbor, MI, will focus on the user experience, rather than the car itself; meaning, how the consumer tracks their order, is notified and how they interact with the car using a unique code to claim their order. The orders will be kept in a specially designed Domino’s Heatwave Compartment fabricated by Roush Enterprises.
If you find yourself encountering one of the test vehicles take solace in knowing the cars are being manually-driven and will contain a team of researchers. We are still some time away from the day we no longer have to face the delivery guy in shame, followed by the voice cracking yell back into the empty house that, “pizza’s here” as you try and justify the 2-liter Coke and molten cake, but you know damn well that the just a couple dollars more at checkout was the only justification you needed.
