It’s safe to say it was an uncertain summer for fans of Fast N’ Loud. When they last saw Richard and the gang at Gas Monkey Garage longtime mechanic Aaron Kaufman had parted ways and fuel was added to the fire following a Mega Race loss to Street Outlaws. All of which spawned uncertainty as to whether the show would be the same without Aaron or whether it would even be back at all; however, in tonight’s premiere it was made clear from the get go that it was business, or rather monkey business, as usual as Richard put a car into a pole doing donuts.
And in true Richard fashion, this was not just any car, but one made famous by Kenny Rogers in the film Six Pack. Though it all worked and the Monkeys were able to repair the car in time (24 hours) for auction the next day where Richard and Dennis would not only recoup their $11,000 investment, but turn a nice little profit letting it go for $17,750.
In keeping with the trend of getting right back to business, Tony Taylor brought to Richard either the, “best thing [he’s] ever done or just a normal thing [he does] every day” and by everyone’s reaction it could very well be the best. He bought a 1973 Chevrolet P30 Step Van which was then determined should be turned into a hot rod. With a game plan for the truck in mind, including an all-black paint scheme, it was off to the races for the Monkeys to prove to Richard that they could come in on time and on budget.
While busy at work with the step van Richard and Dennis head down to Dripping Springs, TX chasing down a lead on a one-owner 1965 Ford Mustang G.T. 350. After confirming that it is in fact number matching, Richard and Dennis are set on buying it from widow and son of the owner, but interest in the car has caused them to triple their asking price. Not wanting to let it go they up their offer to $300,000 and got themselves a deal, “not a steal, but a fair price,” according to Dennis.
Meanwhile back at the shop the guys have implemented a design by democracy mentality putting things like, wheel well shape to a vote with Charles Cimino leading the war on circles. Ultimately, his idea was well received and the area was squared off to incorporate rear A/C and bench seating. Though things are moving smoothly by committee in the back of the shop, Richard has tasked Jason Aker with insuring things stay that way.
However, not blaming Jason, Richard is not pleased with the progress and taking inspiration from Tony Cano asking for a day off to attend the TEXMEX Car Show, he challenges the Monkeys to have the van ready to debut there. And while it is only two weeks away the guys are up for the challenge motivated by the fact that they will get to debut the hot rod van for real fans and not just sending it off to auction.
With two weeks until the reveal Mike Coy finds the earnest of the project now on him and paint. At the same time Jason fears the engine on the $300,000 G.T. 350 may be seized up and is in the middle of a waiting game to see whether or not he can loosen it with oil.
And as if the six-month wait wasn’t long enough for a new episode, that concluded part one of the premiere with the reveal of the step van coming next week!
