Since cars came into existence the desire to go fast, then faster and ultimately as fast as humanly possible has existed. Though as top-speed increases a cars practicality tends to decrease, meaning that despite the technology to go fast we govern top-speeds or relinquish them to track cars only. However, for Johnny Böhmer and his street legal BADD GT nothing was sacrificed as he set the world record for fastest street car and (unofficially) extended his world record time on Friday, October 20th.
Böhmer, owner of South Florida’s Performance Power Racing, first made waves in his BADD GT in 2010 when it broke 250mph in the standing mile. The next goal for him and his crew then became 275mph which they hit on their way to ultimately topping out at the Guinness Book of World Record certified 283mph in 2012. As the team climbs closer and closer to that 300mph mark they continue to expand on the 238mph time previously set, this time clocking an unofficial (as Guinness wasn’t present) 292.8mph.
The 1-mile run took place at Johnny Böhmer Proving Grounds which features a 3.2-mile long, 300-feet wide (25 highway lanes) runway constructed to accommodate landing space shuttles. Already the longest runway in U.S. it also is very flat, very very flat. When constructing it for the space shuttle engineers accounted for the curvature of the earth resulting in only ¼-inch difference end to end. The runways construction and South Florida’s traditionally tranquil whether make this the ultimate proving ground for Böhmer’s BADD GT and will no doubt be the place that he one day breaks the 300mph barrier and his street legal Ford BADD GT.
