Volkswagen Celebrates 50 Years Of Baja Desert Racing

The Baja 1000 has been one of the most grueling races over the past 50 years ever since it was first run as the Mexican 1000 on October 31, 1967. At that time the course was 950 miles long with less than half the field making it to the finish line, but the car that crossed first was a dune buggy built off a Volkswagen Beetle chassis, and so began the brands storied Baja history.

This November will mark the 50th running of BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 and the fourth and final round of the 2017 SCORE World Desert Championship. The course will take drivers and navigators 1,200 through the unforgiving Mexican desert from Ensenada to La Paz. It will also provide the Volkswagen Beetle, the winningest model in Baja history, yet another opportunity at taking home a victory in the iconic race. And in order to commemorate the occasion Volkswagen takes a look back at some of their classic “Baja Bugs” and Spartan Racers using Beetle components.
