Up until the Charger Hellcat there were, arguably, no Chargers other than the B-body. Sure, they technically existed, but the 1980s and 2000s variants were just no match for the pre-1978 Chargers. And while Hellcat performance may be superior, the styling of today is no match for a classic B-body, but thankfully this custom 1970 Dodge Charger merged new performance with old styling.
Dubbed one of the top 15 muscle cars at SEMA it became known as “Punishment,” a titled which one can only assume was earned for what it does to the competition. Featuring a third-generation Hemi this 1970 puts out 620hp from its 6.1-liter engine, bridging the gap between the 440 Six Pack option made available in 1970 and the modern day 707hp of the Hellcat.
Gone are the chrome accents surrounding the grille which were iconic of the 1970 Charger only to be replaced with a carbon-fiber bumper color matched to the Metallic Charcoal of the car. The rear-end features another modern twist with a 2010 Challenger carbon-fiber taillight setup with carbon exhaust tips underneath.
It’s not just the engine either that saw a performance upgrade unequal to any of the B-body era. It features a suspension of a C6 Corvette, Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and Dana rear end. Additionally, it’s upgraded with 14″ Wilwood disc brakes and 6-piston calipers.
This 1970 Dodge Charger maybe a Punishment in name, but it would certainly be a pleasure to own. Which one lucky person now does having just sold for $176,000 at auction.
