In the shadow of safety and “family cars” Volvo had been quietly working on their Polestar Performance line of cars. In June of this year Volvo would split them off into their own subsidiary and Polestar would pivot from creating performance Volvos to performance hybrids under the Polestar banner.
Polestar 1 is the first of three planned hybrid cars which would all compete directly with Tesla. Polestar 1 will certainly have some catching up to do in terms of market share when it goes into production in mid-2019 with just 500 being produced yearly. However, what they may lack in volume they will more than make up for in performance.
The Polestar 1 will be able to travel 93 miles on electricity alone, further than any other hybrid on the market. Additionally, the car will benefit from Polestars years of performance tuning experience with Volvo and feature a four-cylinder Volvo Drive-E engine putting out 600hp and 738lb.-ft. of torque. All this in a 2+2 seater Grand Tourer Coupé which is smaller than S90, but will feature a 50/50 split of Volvo Scalable Platform Architecture to all-new elements.
