A first occurred this past weekend about an hour outside of Dallas, TX at Texas Motorplex, my first ever NHRA event. No stranger to racing I grew up watching NASCAR and have gone to numerous races, as well as races in: Formula One, IRL, CART and Formula DRIFT. However, never any kind of straight-line racing, until now.
Frankly, it just never interested me and even worse, I was of the mindset that, “they’re just going in a straight-line,” essentially the same argument against NASCAR I have fought for years. And while I will never ever admit that I was wrong, they were technically just going in straight-lines, it was badass. Unlike larger racing series, the NHRA has not outgrown their fans yet. Fans are able to wander from the grandstand, through the carnival like feel of food and sponsored tents, right up to their favorite driver’s hauler; a feat which in a series like NASCAR these days would require a thick wallet or some connections.
Then there is the main attraction. The cars launch with an eruption of sound like I have never heard, making races at Daytona and Indianapolis pale in comparison. If I’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure I could see the sound as they took off and as quick as they began they were done; a blink of an eye for me, but an over 300mph 1,000-foot run for some of them. And car after car, class after class, they kept coming with efficiency that impressed. At this point in my career and experiences I wasn’t really expecting to be surprised by a race track environment, but I truly was and for all the right reasons.
